Inflation continues to get worse under President Brandon. In October, the CPI, which is hardly the highest measure of inflation, went up to 6.2% on an annual basis. Then, in November, it shot up yet higher, this time to 6.8% on an annual basis.
Average Americans, the ones who have to pay the increased costs and fit ever more expensive basic goods into their already tight budgets, aren’t enthused.
In fact, according to a recent ABC/Ipsos poll, more than a supermajority of Americans disapprove of how Brandon is handling the inflation problem. It found:
More than two-thirds of Americans (69%) disapprove of how Biden is handling inflation (only 28% approve) while more than half (57%) disapprove of his handling of the economic recovery.
Predictably, Republicans tended to view him in a more negative light than Democrats, though even Democrats quite disapproved of how Brandon is handling inflation:
Partisan splits for inflation show expected negativity in Republican views (94% disapproving), but the survey also reveals weaknesses from Biden’s own party with only a slim majority of Democrats (54%) approving.
Yet worse for Biden, his disapproval rating among Independents is skyrocketing, with a huge majority of them thinking that Biden is handling the inflation threat poorly:
Biden’s orbit is also hemorrhaging independent voters, with 71% disapproving of his handling of inflation.
And it’s unlikely that he’ll be able to distract Americans from their pressing inflation concerns, as a recent Monmouth poll found that inflation is the concern at the top of the minds of most Americans:
Paying everyday household bills, and inflation specifically, top the list of concerns American families say they currently face, with the number saying it is easy for them to pay grocery bills dropping by 13 points in the past two years. The latest Monmouth (“Mon-muth”) University Poll finds nearly half the public feels federal government actions have made things worse regarding their top household concern
As to how the inflation concerns compare to other worries, here’s what Monmouth found:
About 3 in 10 Americans name either everyday bills (15%) or inflation specifically (14%) as the biggest concern facing their family right now. This far outpaces Covid (18%) or any other single issue as the top kitchen table worry in the country. This past summer, far fewer Americans named either rising prices or household bills as their biggest concern (16% in July 2021) and the amount of concern over household bills was even smaller just over a year ago (8% in August 2020).
Though that poll was also somewhat affected, with more Republicans than Democrats reporting that inflation was a pressing concern for them.
Still, the problem is a major one for both Republicans and Democrats, and not something that Biden will likely be able to wave away or distract people from. Red, blue, or independent, everyone still has to pay their bills, and those bills are only going up thanks to Brandon.
