This past week, Yuma Mayor Douglas Nicholls declared a local emergency. Why? Because he was forced to by the massive number of migrants flooding into his city from Mexico without even being stopped and processed by the Border Patrol.
Covering the border in Yuma today after the Mayor declared a local state of emergency, right now authorities are loading up a group of men, women and children who crossed the border today. According to AZ Family, a news site, the mayor declared the emergency in an attempt to staunch the flow of thousands of migrants into his city:
The mayor called the influx of migrants entering the Yuma area a “humanitarian and border crisis.” The emergency declaration cites that federal agents and border patrol are struggling to manage the flow of people entering the community. The mayor claims that during this week alone, over 6,000 migrants have crossed over into the United States from Mexico, traveling through the Yuma area.
That claim is supported by the mayor’s emergency declaration, which notes the massive influx of illegal immigrants into the United States generally and Yuma area specifically, along with the massive problems caused to the area’s agricultural and medical sectors.
After noting those problems, the declaration goes on to empower the relevant authorities to do what is necessary to staunch the flow of migrants.
And, as Breitbart reports, the influx is not only massive, but is wreaking havoc on the border facilities in the area, which are now massively overcrowded:
The Yuma area experienced a sharp increase in migrant crossings in recent months. Arrests in October 2021 were more than 2,600 percent greater when compared to the previous October.
The recent surge in migrant crossings is having a devastating impact on the surrounding Border Patrol stations and the soft sided processing center near Yuma. They are cumulatively more than 800 percent over the recommended COVID-19 detention capacity.
It remains to be seen if the emergency declaration will staunch the flow, or if it will finally draw the eye of DC to the border and lead to more resources being deployed to deal with the illegal immigrant problem. But, for now, it’s a good start.
