Amazon isn’t just crushing small businesses in America, it’s also apparently crushing dissent in China, working with the CCP to silence negative reviews of Xi’s book.
News on that comes from Reuters, which reported that:
Amazon.com Inc was marketing a collection of President Xi Jinping’s speeches and writings on its Chinese website about two years ago, when Beijing delivered an edict, according to two people familiar with the incident. The American e-commerce giant must stop allowing any customer ratings and reviews in China.
A negative review of Xi’s book prompted the demand, one of the people said. “I think the issue was anything under five stars,” the highest rating in Amazon’s five-point system, said the other person.
So, to appease the CCP tyrants, Amazon apparently disabled its rating system in China, preventing customers on Amazon.cn from commenting or posting reviews of the collection of speeches and writings.
And this isn’t a one-off decision to temporarily appease the CCP. As Reuters reports, Amazon has recognized since 2018 that censorship is a crucial part of the Chinese system, which brooks no dissent:
An internal 2018 Amazon briefing document that describes the company’s China business lays out a number of “Core Issues” the Seattle-based giant has faced in the country. Among them: “Ideological control and propaganda is the core of the toolkit for the communist party to achieve and maintain its success,” the document notes. “We are not making judgement on whether it is right or wrong.”
[…]In a core element of this strategy, the internal document and interviews show, Amazon partnered with an arm of China’s propaganda apparatus to create a selling portal on the company’s U.S. site, Amazon.com
The 90,000 books and writings sold by the propaganda arm, called “China Books,” include writings defending the situation in Xinjiang, promoting China’s successes in dealing with Covid-19, and extolling the “strengths” of the CCP and communist system.
That means that Amazon isn’t just censoring reviews of Xi’s book to appease Red China, it’s also actively working with Red Chinese propagandists to promote commie propaganda in the US.
Amazon, in its defense of pushing communist propaganda, said that it “complies with all applicable laws and regulations, wherever we operate, and China is no exception.”
Many Americans would likely prefer that a US company not “comply” with the demands of communist propagandists, especially given that China is threatening to kill US troops.
Still, Amazon, likely blinded by potential profits in the Middle Kingdom, has decided to side with the Reds over America.
