D.C. National Guard Officer says Generals Lied about Jan. 6th

According to a former D.C. National Guard officer named Col. Earl Matthews, the two generals that testified to Congress about the Army’s response to the Jan. 6th trespass are total liars that created a revisionist history of events “worthy of the best Stalinist or North Korea propagandist.”

To criticize them and report the truth about what happened, Col. Matthews wrote a 36-page report in which he slams the two generals, Gen. Charles Flynn and Lt. Gen. Walter Piatt, calling them “absolute and unmitigated liars” whose testimony was “replete with factual inaccuracies.”

In fact, the introduction to the report itself says:

The purpose of this memorandum is to outline and detail the myriad inaccuracies, false or misleading statements, or examples of faulty analysis contained in a recent publicly released Department of Defense Inspector General (DoDIG) report of its investigation into the Department of Defense’s actions leading up to and in response to the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol which occurred on 6 January 2021. This memorandum will also detail a series of false and/or misleading statements or documents deliberately made or submitted to the DoDIG and/or to the House Oversight and Reform Committee by senior officers of the United States Army.

And what were those many inaccuracies and lies? Well, one is that the military’s response wasn’t delayed. According to him, it was. In his words “Every leader in the D.C. Guard wanted to respond and knew they could respond to the riot at the seat of government,” but couldn’t because they weren’t given permission to do so.

Why wasn’t the National Guard given orders to respond? Because D.C. guard officials “set [sic] stunned watching in the Armory” for hours. Instead of responding quickly and efficiently, as military officers are theoretically trained to do, they just sat around.

According to Matthews, that means that while “Our Army has never failed us and did not do so on January 6, 2021…occasionally some of our Army leaders have failed us and they did so on January 6th. Then they lied about it and tried to cover it up. They tried to smear a good man and to erase history.

And, on that topic, Col. Matthews alleges that Flynn and Piatt lied when they told Congress about pleas for the D.C. Guard to quickly be deployed on Jan. 6. They weren’t pleading for anything; they were sitting around, stunned.

Politico reports that the Army had this to say in response to Col. Matthews’ report:

“As the Inspector General concluded, actions taken ‘were appropriate, supported by requirements, consistent with the DOD’s roles and responsibilities for DSCA, and compliant with laws, regulations, and other applicable guidance,” Brady added. “We stand by all testimony and facts provided to date, and vigorously reject any allegations to the contrary. However, with the January 6th Commission’s investigation still ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

So, the Army is disputing his allegations. But, while it’s unknown what exactly happened that day, what is clear is that something went wrong, and Matthews’ account seems far more believable than what the two generals responsible are pushing.
