Everyone wants something for nothing it seems, including the recently victorious Taliban, which is now demanding that the West fork over $10 billion dollars. As ZeroHedge reports:
[The Taliban is] pleading with global powers to send $10 billion in funds to the country. In particular they are urgently asking for the release of reserve funds in the Afghan central bank that were previously frozen.
Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said Afghanistan needs the world’s “mercy and compassion” at a moment millions are on the brink of starvation, and are without jobs, and amid a fast plummeting currency. This as they deploy ‘Islamic morality police’ to the streets (something the Saudis have long done too).
That minister, Muttaqi, recently did an interview with the Associated Press, during which the AP reports:
Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi also told The Associated Press that the Taliban government wants good relations with all countries and has no issue with the United States. He urged Washington and other nations to release upward of $10 billion in funds that were frozen when the Taliban took power Aug. 15, following a rapid military sweep across Afghanistan and the sudden, secret flight of U.S.-backed President Ashraf Ghani.
“Sanctions against Afghanistan would … not have any benefit,” Muttaqi said Sunday, speaking in his native Pashto during the interview in the sprawling pale brick Foreign Ministry building in the heart of the capital of Kabul.
So, the gang of thugs and terrorists is now pleading for “mercy” and “compassion.” What a turnaround.
In any case, the Taliban, which had previously pushed for the $10 billion it claims it is owed by threatening to flood Europe with refugees and migrants if it didn’t fork over the cash, is now taking a softer tone and even promoting its more liberal attitude toward women’s rights as the reason the West should hand it billions. Again according to the AP:
Muttaqi said the Taliban have changed since they last ruled.
“We have have made progress in administration and in politics… in interaction with the nation and the world. With each passing day, we will gain more experience and make more progress,” he said.
Muttaqi said that under the new Taliban government, girls are going to school through grade 12 in 10 of the country’s 34 provinces, private schools and universities are operating unhindered, and 100% of women who had previously worked in the health sector are back on the job.
“This shows that we are committed in principle to women participation,” he said.
For now, however, US policy remains unchanged, despite its supposed liberalization. Jen Psaki, during a Monday White House briefing, said that the $10 billion “reserves remain inaccessible to the Taliban.” So we’ll just have to wait and see if the Taliban starts going to woke to get its cash or if it’ll remain true to form and switch back to threats of apocalyptic doom unless its diktats are obeyed.
