Dan Crenshaw might not always be the most rock-ribbed of conservatives, he certainly has a conciliatory streak that leads to him consorting with the left and attacking his most conservative allies from time to time.
However, he does occasionally let his conservative colors shine through and says the things that America needs to hear. He recently did so on the topic of crime and the left’s soft-on-crime policies, pointing out that the left, in its defense of the career criminals and gangsters, is showing that it cares only for criminals and couldn’t care less about the victims that those thugs prey on.
As he put it, “if the left really believed in compassion, then that compassion would extend to the victims that keep getting killed, whether those victims are police officers or whether those victims are civilians.”
Those comments came when Crenshaw appeared on Fox News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom.” During that appearance, he made the argument that the root of the spike in crime we’ve seen in America as of late is the left’s pro-criminal stance. In his words:
“So, as you reported, we had three officers shot this week. Officer Galloway was murdered by an illegal immigrant here in this country illegally the week before that. And what’s the root cause of this? Well, it’s leftist ideology.
So, leftist ideology fundamentally does two things: It punishes success while accommodating bad behavior out of some false sense of compassion. And that manifests in lenient D.A.s, lenient judges, lenient prosecutors that are soft on crime and will let violent criminals out. … You’re seeing crime spike. And so, the root cause is leftist ideology.
We need to address that root cause and actually put people away in prison when they commit violent offenses. It really is that simple. And if you really believed in compassion, if the left really believed in compassion, then that compassion would extend to the victims that keep getting killed, whether those victims are police officers or whether those victims are civilians.”
Crenshaw is right. The solution to crime isn’t to keep letting criminals back out on the streets time and time again, hoping that if only they’re shown enough compassion and mercy they’ll repent and become productive citizens.
Rather, the solution, as Crenshaw says, is to lock them up for as long as is necessary to stop them from preying on the populace. That will mean a campaign of getting rid of the Soros-backed DAs, soft on crime prosecutors, and rubber-spined judges that often do little more than slap career criminals on the wrist before turning them back out on the streets to prey on law-abiding citizens.
Further, it will mean doing away with the entire mindset that Crenshaw articulates. As Ayn Rand put it, “pity for the guilty is treason to the innocent.” There must be no more treason to the innocent. Instead, we need to start locking these thugs up and throwing away the key.
