Why are conservatives praising Bill Maher all of the sudden? He’s still a liberal, still openly supports liberal positions, and certainly doesn’t stand for conservative viewpoints, even if he’s sometimes reasonable about political issues on his show.
But that reasonableness is why he’s praised. Though he’s still on the other side about most issues, he, unlike most of the rest of the leftist talking heads, hasn’t gone completely insane nor is he so far left that he doesn’t understand what problems there currently are in America.
Hence why, in what would have been a bizarre segment not too long ago, the “Real Time” host played a clip of Fox News host Dana Perino saying that he should run for president, suggesting that he’s one of the few liberals that hasn’t gone out of his way to alienate Trump supporters and thus might be an electable Democrat.
Maher, joking about her complimenting him, said “In the space of 20 years, Bush press secretaries have gone from telling me, I need to watch what I say to wondering if I should run for president.”
He then went on to explain that while some Democrats will take Peroni’s praise of him as a sign of him having changed and moved to the right, he assured viewers that that was not the case. Rather, in his view, he had stayed more or less the same while the left got more and more radical, more and more insane:
“Now, some people think this means I’ve changed. I assure you, I have not. I am still the same unmarried, childless, pot-smoking libertine I always was.
Let’s get this straight. It’s not me who’s changed, it’s the left who is now made up of a small contingent who’ve gone mental and a large contingent who refuse to call them out for it, but I will.
That’s why I’m a hero at Fox these days, which shows just how much liberals have their head up their a** because if they really thought about it, they would have made me a hero on their media.
But that can’t happen in this ridiculous new era of mind-numbing partisanship, where if I keep it real about the nonsense in the Democratic Party, it makes me an instant hero to Republicans.”
Watch him here:
Maher’s right. He’s still a liberal, not a centrist and certainly not a conservative. But, unlike most other liberals, he’s committed to the truth and is willing to speak it, however unpopular it might be or make him.
He then went on to argue that the opposite is true of Liz Cheney, who’s now a hero on the left because they perceive her as telling the truth about the right, saying:
“The same thing happened in reverse to Darth Vader’s daughter, Liz Cheney, who is now a hero to liberals simply because she recognizes Biden did not steal the last election. What a sad commentary on our politics. Where simply acknowledging reality is now seen as a profile in courage.”
Continuing, he said “It’s not my fault that the party of FDR and JFK is turning into the party of LOL and WTF,” and pointed out some of the things the left is doing that are quite easy to criticize, such as “canceling Lincoln and Dr. Seuss, teaching children they’re oppressors and math is racist, making Mr. Potato Head gender-neutral and now an emoji for pregnant men.”
The saddest part is that he’s mostly right. He’s a leftist; there’s no reason Fox would be praising him if society were sane. But it’s not, and he’s one of the few remaining people on the left who’s willing to speak the truth about every issue rather than just some issues.
