Ronald Reagan once said “Remember, we have no enemies, only opponents,” referring to the once-cherished idea that in America it’s possible to disagree with one political side or another without that disagreement escalating to the point of enmity. In other words, the parties compete, they don’t wage war.
Rep. Clyburn, however, the House Majority Whip and a Democrat from South Carolina, apparently doesn’t share that sentiment. In fact, he views Trump and everyone else who “showed up” on January 6th as a “domestic enemy.”
At least, that’s what he said when he appeared Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” program and described those groups as such. In his words:
“We just got around the filibuster to raise the debt limit. Why? Because we don’t want to put the full faith and credit of the United States at risk.
The filibuster is there for all of these issues that may be policy issues, but when it comes to the Constitution of the United States of America, no one person sitting downtown in the spa ought to be able to pick up the form and say you are going to put a hold on my ability to vote.
That is what is going on here. I wish they’d stop that foolishness because if we do not protect the vote with everything that we’ve got, we will not have a country to protect going forward.
I don’t know where we got the notion from, that this democracy is here to stay no matter how we conduct ourselves.
Our job when we took the oath of office to protect this country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. There are domestic enemies that showed up January 6, and they didn’t stop there. They’re still going on, and you hear it when the president tweets out or whatever he said about getting rid of people’s convenient voting places, saying to paraplegics that we can’t make it convenient for to you vote, saying to 90-year-old you got to stand in line four and five hours to vote, and if anybody gives you a glass of water, they will be put in jail. That’s third world stuff.”
That’s right, apparently Trump’s tweets about people having to actually show up and vote to vote make him a domestic enemy, as does the simple act of showing up to a protest or to hear a sitting president give a speech.
Perhaps that’s why there’s a concrete wall being built around the White House, why the FBI refuses to admit that it was involved in Jan. 6th, and why the Pantsuit Empire is so intent on distracting us by stirring up a war with Russia; they view MAGA conservatives as domestic enemies and want to do everything possible to obfuscate and crack down on them.
In any case, it’s disturbing that a sitting Congressman is calling a former president and his supporters “domestic enemies.” Though Clyburn describes Trump’s tweets as “third world stuff,” the real banana republic vibes are coming from those describing members of the other party as “domestic enemies.”
