A shocking aspect of the modern left’s dialogue is an overt hatred of Israel, one that blisters to the surface at every opportunity. Whether it takes the form of pushing the BDS (Boycott, Divest, and Sanction movement), support for the Palestinian terrorists in Hamas over Israel, or overtly anti-Semitic rhetoric, it’s clear that many Democrats have an Israel problem.
AOC, for example, attacked Israel for defending itself from Palestinian attacks after Biden gave a statement supportive of Israel, saying “Blanket statements like these w/ little context or acknowledgment of what precipitated this cycle of violence — namely, the expulsions of Palestinians and attacks on Al Aqsa — dehumanize Palestinians & imply the US will look the other way at human rights violations. It’s wrong.”
Similarly, Rep. Rashida Tlaib said, when speaking about the Israeli “occupation” of Palestine, “I know that you all understand the structure that we’ve been living under right now is designed by those that exploit the rest of us for their own profit…I tell people, those same people, that if you open the curtain and look behind the curtain, it’s the same people that make money and, yes, they do, off of racism, off of these broken policies. There is someone there making money, and you saw it!”
Rep. Omar, not to be outdone, described Israel as a violator of human rights on par with the Taliban on CNN, then went ahead and doubled down on that comment rather than back down and say that Israel wasn’t as evil as a terrorist network.
The rhetoric of those three and a few allies, rhetoric which is firmly against Israel and holds it to a far different standard than its enemies, one that their critics allege is driven by anti-Semitism, has led to the Democratic Party quickly becoming known as the anti-Israel, if not anti-Semite, party.
Average Democrats who don’t hold a grudge against Israel or hold anti-Semitic beliefs are frustrated with that and are starting to push back.
Rep. Gottheimer is one of the ones leading that charge, firmly saying that the anti-Semitic rhetoric of some Democrats is an unacceptable, “growing cancer.”
As you can hear in the video, Rep. Gottheimer notes that it’s not all of the Democrats that are pushing the hateful rhetoric but only a small group before hammering what they’re saying as unacceptable, saying “it is a very small group of people, let me be very clear about this. People think it is taking over the Democratic party which is not true. It is a very small cancer but it is a growing cancer.”
This isn’t the first time he’s spoken out on the issue. Back when Rep. Omar said that Israel is the same as Hamas or the Taliban, he signed a letter that said: “equating the United States and Israel to Hamas… at best discredits one’s intended argument and at worst reflects deep-seated prejudice.”
At that time, he also said “There’s a long history of comments here that I have found unacceptable and deeply concerning and this just adds to the record. So am I satisfied? I’m just really frustrated by the continued series of comments targeted at the U.S.-Israel relationship.”
He’s right: their rhetoric is hate-filled and unacceptable. While leftists on the news might slander the GOP as a gang of Nazis, it’s the socialist Democrats like AOC and Omar that are eyeing Israel like wolves.
