Governor DeSantis isn’t the only one giving a rousing speech at CPAC. Texas Senator Ted Cruz just gave a great one too.
Beginning with a joke poking fun at Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, who was caught maskless in a photo while students had to remain masked, Cruz said:
“What an amazing sight. Thousands of patriots and not a damn mask in sight. Obviously, everyone here is just following Stacey Abrams’ example.”
It was then that he went after the left and its war on liberty. Beginning that portion of his speech by saying “We find ourselves at an existential moment for our nation. The threats in our country have never been greater,” Cruz went off to list a litany of examples, saying:
“Vaccine mandates vs doctors and nurses; mask mandates vs kids in school; Spotify versus Joe Rogan; GoFundMe versus Canadian Truckers; Justin Trudeau–”
At that point, the raucous crowd erupted in boos, to which Cruz responded by playing along and saying “That is the first time in recorded history that any Canadian has ever elicited that much of a response from any crowd on planet earth.”
Then, getting back on script and on point, he went back to listing off his examples, saying “Justin Trudeau and the god-fearing Canadian truckers. The New York Times versus Bari Weiss. Levi’s versus Jennifer Sey. AOC vs damn near anyone who ever dared to criticize her.”
Beyond just giving examples, Cruz described what it is that’s motivating the left: fear of liberty. In his words:
“This is not a battle between the weak and the strong,” he said. “What is playing out is the powerful are afraid. They are terrified of you. They look out at the men and women in this room and they scare the living crap out of them. They are afraid of truth. They are afraid of liberty.”
He then ended on a note of defiance, saying both that patriots are winning and that those patriots can’t surrender or apologize, as doing so will spell their doom:
“Don’t ever apologize to the woke mob. It doesn’t work. They are not engaged in rational discourse. They want to destroy you… Respond with joy. Laugh at them. It drives them bananas.
[..]We are taking our country back. We are standing up to power. We are defending liberty. We are defending our constitution. We are defending our bill of rights and together, we will save this great nation.”
While Cruz’s speech was good, it likely came off as less than honest to many of the patriots in the crowd. That’s because Cruz, speaking about the trespassing incident on January 6th, called those who trespassed “terrorists,” a phrase many took issue with.
Though he later recanted, or at least tried to, in an appearance on Tucker Carlson’s show, the candid comment has led many to believe that he’s not “all in” in regards to the MAGA cause.
So, his speech included all the right points, but whether or not it’ll return him to the good graces of the MAGA movement is still up in the air.
