Florida Man Who Took Pelosi’s Lectern Was Sentenced. Here’s What Happened

Remember the guy (who happened to be a Florida man, go figure) that took Pelosi’s lectern during the trespass in the Capitol on January 6th?

Well, he was finally sentenced, his sentence coming over a year after his arrest. According to the Epoch Times:

The Florida man who said he “broke the internet” when photographed carrying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s lectern at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was sentenced Friday to 75 days in jail, a $5,000 fine, and a year of supervised release.

[…]The stay-at-home father of five children will be allowed to serve the jail sentence at a facility nearest to his home so his children can visit, Judge Walton ruled. With credit for time served, Johnson faces another 60 days in jail. He was free on personal recognizance at the time of sentencing.

Again according to the Epoch Times, the judge, speaking on the sentence, said “I do consider this to be a very serious offense. It’s one of the darkest days, I think unfortunately, that this country has ever suffered. … It’s a slippery slope from what happened on that day to what may happen the next time around. I just hope it’s not the case, but the precedent has been set.

That’s much in line with what Democrats and other establishment figures have said about the incident.

Ted Cruz, for example, called the incident a terrorist attack, saying “We are approaching a solemn anniversary, and it is the anniversary of a violent terrorist attack on the Capitol, where we saw the men and women of law enforcement demonstrate incredible courage.”

The FBI director had a similarly apoplectic response to the trespass, saying it was “on the same level with ISIS and homegrown violent extremists.

Then there’s Pelosi, perhaps just mad that someone took her lectern. She had one of the craziest responses of all, going so far as to label some guy walking around with her lectern an “assault on democracy.” In her words:

One year ago, the Capitol and those who work within it were targeted in a violent insurrection that sought to undermine democracy.

As we reflect on that darkest day, we remember that the insurrection sought not only to attack the building but to undermine democracy itself,” Pelosi said. “But the assault did not deter us from our duty.”

All the other usual suspects joined in too, piling on and labeling the incident somewhere on the terror attack to insurrection scale.

The problem is, Johnson, the guy who took the lectern, was only fined $5000 and sentenced to 75 days in jail.

Now, were this an actual insurrection or terror attack, that would be a very light sentence. 600,000 Americans died in the first American Civil War and thousands died in 9/11.

Theoretically, were someone caught plotting the equivalent to those horrible events, they’d be punished with a bit more than a four-figure fine and two and a half months in jail. That’s an even lighter sentence than Epstein got!

So, what’s going on? It’s not that the judge was too lenient; he said the lectern thief’s actions represented one of the darkest days in our country’s history.

Rather, the issue is that all those cries of doom are meaningless drivel; a few people trespassed, little more, and Johnson’s sentence reflects that. There was no insurrection or terror attack, only a guy from Florida wandering around with Pelosi’s podium while grinning like an idiot.
