While his counter-part in the Senate, Minority Leader McConnell, continues to be a RINO and dismiss the conservative base in a seeming attempt to reconcile with the left, House Minority Leader McCarthy is tacking to the right and, in his rhetoric, at least, embracing the conservative base in the run-up to the 2022 election.
Whether he actually believes it or not is unclear, but it is clear that McCarthy is at least trying to ingratiate himself with the right by speaking out on issues in a way that shows his views are similar to those of the base.
He did such again recently, speaking on Jen Psaki and the Biden Administration’s continued defense of masks even at a time when blue states are tossing the mask mandates out the window.
Speaking on that point in a statement to Townhall, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) slammed Team Biden as “leading from behind” on COVID-19, still pushing for the old standard as red and blue states ditch the mandates and free their citizens to do as they see fit. He said:
“As has been the case throughout the past 12 months of President Biden’s presidency, his administration is once again leading from behind. Republican-led states have long reopened and dropped mask mandates, and this week we even saw some of the most liberal governors finally follow suit.
But despite the urgency to return to normal that is being demonstrated by both the science and the sentiment from the American public, the Biden’s Covid response team is digging in on their policies of keeping kids in masks and keeping our citizens in isolation.”
He added that “People are fed up with this administration’s fear mongering, data-defying logic, and government bureaucrats who want to control people’s lives. We must restore normalcy – Americans want to get back to their pre-pandemic lives.”
Those comments, ones that are quite congruent with the thoughts of the GOP base, come after Jen Psaki snapped at a Fox reporter who asked her about masks and if the CDC would change its guidance on masks. During that fiery back and forth, she said:
“We know what works. The CDC is always going to be reviewing their guidance, including mask guidance. But in terms of when they will provide additional new guidance, that is up to them.”
Jen also defended masks by saying “The guidance is very clear, which is that we recommend masking in schools.“
REPORTER: “If you could just clarify…do you think that at some point in the future…it would we appropriate for there to be updated federal guidelines” on masking in schools?

Problem is, the guidance isn’t “very clear,” something that even the Atlantic is now reporting on. In that outlet’s words:
“Scientists generally agree that, according to the research literature, wearing masks can help protect people from the coronavirus, but the precise extent of that protection, particularly in schools, remains unknown—and it might be very small. What data do exist have been interpreted into guidance in many different ways. The World Health Organization, for example, does not recommend masks for children under age 6. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control recommends against the use of masks for any children in primary school.”
McCarthy is right; Team Biden isn’t leading, it’s following and sticking to the same tired few phrases in the hope that the problem will just go away.
