President Trump’s endorsements are campaign gold for Republicans, especially if they’re in a tight primary; when competing against other Republicans, having Trump’s support can make all the difference.
So, many were waiting to see who Trump would back in the Georgia gubernatorial race, as whoever he backs will likely be the Republican candidate and will then have to take on Stacey Abrams.
The two choices of note for Republicans are Brian Kemp, the current governor, and David Perdue, a former Georgia Senator.
Well, the wait is over: Trump just threw his support behind Perdue in a massive way, creating an amazing ad for him that Breitbart obtained and reported on. Watch it here:
As you can hear in the ad, Trump blasts Perdue as weak and gives his unreserved support to Perdue. First, taking on Kemp, Trump says “The Democrats walked all over Brian Kemp. He was afraid of Stacey ‘the Hoax’ Abrams. Brian Kemp let us down. We can’t let it happen again.”
Then, moving on to Perdue, Trump changes tone entirely, saying “David Perdue, an America First conservative outsider, is the only candidate for governor endorsed by President Donald Trump. David Perdue is an outstanding man. He’s tough. He’s smart. He has my complete and total endorsement. Vote for David Perdue.”
The ad ends with the Perdue campaign’s slogan, “Stop Stacey, Save Georgia.”
Perdue, for his part, said in a statement that “This race is about putting people ahead of politicians, and that’s exactly what I’ll do as Governor. We’ll leave no stone unturned to share our bold vision to unite Republicans, stop Stacey Abrams, and save Georgia.”
Breitbart reports that the Perdue campaign plans to spend “six figures” on airing the ad on Fox News statewide, indicating that his campaign will rely heavily on Trump’s support of him, using that endorsement to boost his MAGA credentials.
The endorsement of Perdue makes sense. With Georgia on the verge of becoming a blue state, Trump probably needed to back one of the candidates to help them beat Stacey Abrams, the horrible Democrat that keeps running and losing.
Since he needed to back one of them, Perdue was the obvious choice. He, while in the Senate, voted Trump’s way on nearly everything, establishing himself as one of the most pro-Trump Republicans, at least based on his voting record.
Kemp, on the other hand, has been on the receiving end of Trump’s ire, with Breitbart reporting that “Trump has taken aim at Kemp specifically for complacency with the election process. He blames the governor for a consent decree Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) signed off on in March 2020 that had served as a court settlement between Raffensperger and the Georgia Democrat Party related primarily to signature verification.”
So, based on that dichotomy, a Perdue endorsement was the obvious choice, as it rewarded loyalty and hit back at one of the weak-kneed governors whose inaction might have cost Trump the 2020 election. Not it just remains to be seen if Georgia voters see things the same way as Trump and rally behind Perdue to take down Stacey Abrams.
