It was a calm, sunny day in a New Orleans neighborhood, with people calmly going about their business and enjoying the sweet rays of the sun while walking around the neighborhood, relaxing at home, or otherwise just living their normal lives.
And then a gray sedan screeched into the intersection, and with it came an image of horror, one that will surely be impossible to forget for those that saw it. Here’s what Fox 8 reports that two locals saw:
“It was dragging a lady by the seatbelt outside the car. The door had closed on the seatbelt, and she was stuck in it… I got out of my vehicle screaming please stop other neighbors were also screaming,” said Ecker.
“She was screaming, and she was screaming to please let her go and then they slowed down and opened the door to kick her out and they made the corner by Rouses. As soon as I saw her, I screamed. I just started running for her I thought if I could somehow, I don’t know what I could do, but I thought if I could dislodge her from this car … when I looked down her body was already there, and her arm was … It’s just not something you expect to see,” said Mascar.
Yes, carjackers were speeding around, dragging an elderly woman by the arm as they tried to get away with the stolen car.
According to the police, Linda Frickey, the 73-year-old victim, was dragged nearly a block before her arm was severed.
One person interviewed by Fox, remarking upon the crime situation, said “If you are so afraid to go from your house to your car and can’t sit in your car to make a phone call without some delinquent pulling you out and dragging you down the street there’s something wrong with that.”
Four teenagers were arrested in connection with the blood-curdling crime. The New Orleans Police Department provided the security camera images of the four African-American youths visible at the top of the article after the crime, disseminating them to the public in the hope that the perps would be turned in.
They were. Two of the four, one 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, were turned into the police by their parents. Later, two more, one a 16-year-old girl and the other a second 15-year-old girl, were arrested. So, the police think they got all four youths involved in the horrific incident.
Now it’s time to charge them for the crime. KLSA, reporting on that aspect of the situation, reported that:
Ferguson said all four teens are facing second-degree murder charges, and he plans to personally ask Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams to prosecute the suspects in adult court, where they could face life sentences with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
“I would say absolutely I will ask they be charged as adults,” Ferguson said. “I mean, look at the nature of the crime. Brazenness. Broad daylight. No regard for this woman hanging outside the car … At some point, we have to hold people accountable.”
Life sentences seem too merciful for this sort of crime, but trying them as adults does seem like a good start.
