Ronald Reagan, speaking out the nature of politics in America, famously said “we don’t have enemies, we have opponents,” his point obviously being that we compete for votes, not to destroy one another.
Some of that sentiment might have worn off given the nature of the culture wars, but the basic point has held remarkably true, at least some of the time. For example, when Justice Ginsburg died, Trump didn’t gloat or celebrate. Instead, he called her “an amazing woman.” Watch:
However, the sentiment has been wearing off on the left. When Trump got Covid, for example, many on the left openly celebrated and wished for his death. According to one poll, a significant minority, about 40%, of the Democratic Party was glad that he got Covid.
Well, now one leftist, a USA Today writer, is acting much the same way, cheering the fact that the author of the bill derisively referred to as the “don’t say gay bill” had his house wrecked by a tornado.
Breitbart, reporting on the background of the situation, says that:
The tornado that hit Central Florida last Saturday caused up to $12 million in damages and ripped through Harding’s home in Ocala while his family was present. No injuries were reported.
“We are blessed,” said Harding. “It could have been a lot worse.”
The same article adds that, in a social media post, Harding said:
This message is for those impacted by the tornadoes today in Ocala. Please stay out from under trees, there are many hanging limbs that are often referred to as ‘Widow Makers.’ Today was a tough day for all of us. We have so much to be thankful for, material things can be replaced, human life cannot.
Well, Michael J. Stern, the leftist USA Today writer, decided to use the opportunity to gloat and give a doubtful theological take, saying:
I’m not a believer, but the tornado that just ripped apart the home of the author of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law is making me reconsider.
Hey, Joe Harding (@josephbharding), God thinks you’re a rotten bigot and just bitch-slapped you.

The Bible, particularly some stories from the Old Testament, run contrary to Stern’s hate-filled take.
Harding, for his part, focused on helping his constituents rather than engaging in partisan bickering. After the damage wrought by the storm became clear, he posted advice about what to do and offered to help those in the community, saying:
“If you live in a community hit hard by Tornadoes yesterday here are some things to know: Keep your house and car doors locked, not everyone that will come into your neighborhood has good intentions; Stay out from under trees, there are many limbs that will continue to fall; Before hiring a contractor to do work on your home, talk to your insurance company; Be [wary] of out of town roofers. Roofers watch the news and they will come from out of town to chase work. Make sure they are licensed and check for reviews online. As always I’m here to help in [any way] I can.”
