According to ICE’s annual report, deportations fell a stunning amount last year, plummeting a shocking 70% to 59,011 total deportations, only about 20% of the 300,000 or so deportations that were typical of the Trump and even Obama years, as Just the News reports.
What that means is that while the ICE report claims that “ICE’s arrest statistics paint a picture of broad operational success,” that’s not in any case the truth. Rather, it looks like ICE has been doing the opposite of what it’s supposed to and has been letting illegals stick around in the US.
In fact, ICE more or less admitted to that reality, saying in the aforementioned statement that the massive drop in deportations reflects:
“enforcement priorities to better focus the Department’s resources on the apprehension and removal of non-citizens who are a threat to our national security, public safety, and border security and advance the interests of justice by ensuring a case-by-case assessment of whether an individual poses a threat.”.
Going on, the report also claims that “For the first time, enforcement priorities now require an assessment of the individual and the totality of the facts and circumstances to ensure resources are focused most effectively on those who pose a threat.”
So, in simpler terms, Brandon has told ICE to keep deporting the very worst illegals, as those tend to be bad for optics if they stick around and commit horrific crimes, but he only wants them deported and for the rest to be able to stick around regardless of what immigration law says should be done with them.
Senator Ted Cruz called out that and ripped it to shreds in a March 11th letter to Mayorkas, saying:
The result has been predictable: By signaling that you will not enforce immigration laws, you have invited unprecedented increases in illegal border crossings. In 2021, CBP recorded over 2 million migrant encounters. According to CBP arrest data, the agency has arrested 2,424 criminal aliens so far in FY 2022. Although it is only March, this number is just 14 arrests shy of the total number of arrests in all of FY 2020. These individuals have been convicted of murder, rape, assault, robbery, weapons possession, and drug possession among other crimes. Your directive sends the unfortunate message that violating our country’s immigration laws is not a serious crime and will
not result in any adverse civil legal actions.
Cruz then goes on to highlight horrific crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
Nor is Cruz the only one calling out Biden’s deportation failure. Rep. Darrell Issa did too, saying, according to Just the News, that “the massive drop in deportations is evidence of a “slow march to abolish ICE” like many progressives have lobbied for.”
Both make a fair point: why is ICE not deporting illegals? What’s the point of an agency meant to deal with illegal immigrants if it just sets them free?
The border must be defended. Unfortunately, that isn’t happening with Biden in charge.
