COOL: Norm Macdonald Shot Secret Special To Be Released After He Died. Now It’s About To Come Out

Famed comedian Norm Macdonald died back in September after a years-long battle with cancer, ripped from the Earth at the relatively young age of 61.

But before he became so sick that he had to be hospitalized and before his untimely passing, Macdonald worked with Netflix on creating a special to be released “in case things went south”.

News on that comes from the Hollywood Reporter, which reported that Macdonald managed to privately shoot one last hour-long comedy special with Netflix before his battle with cancer grew all-consuming, quoting Lori Jo Hoekstra, his longtime producing partner, as saying:

“His test results were not good, so during the heart of COVID-19 pandemic and literally the night before going in for a procedure, he wanted to get this on tape just in case — as he put it — things went south. It was his intention to have a special to share if something happened.

Hoekstra also said, when discussing the post-portem special and the joy she’s taking in being able to release it, that:

It makes me so happy that I can share it, but also so sad that we can’t share it with him. He didn’t do this for the shock that it exists. He shot it because he loved his material and was so proud of his material. He worked so hard and it really would’ve bothered him to have done all that work and not been able to show everybody. He did it for the stand-up. I just hope people appreciate that he did this.”

So, again according to the Hollywood Reporter article, Netflix filmed Macdonald doing the special in his living room and kept it just in case his procedure and hospitalization didn’t go well.

Though it did go well, he wasn’t able to refilm the special in front of an audience, so it’s the at-home recording that will be released when Netflix releases the show, Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special‚ on May 30.

The Hollywood Reporter article also notes that the post-mortem comedy special is likely a first in the industry, saying:

The stand-up hour is likely a first in the world of comedy — a postmortem last joke and testament from a comic who relished defying contention. “From the various conversations I’ve had within our circle of friends in comedy and producing, no one has heard of any comparison to this [situation] — not even close,” says Hoekstra

The subject of the show, however, has not yet been released. Though it will almost certainly be, given Macdonald’s reputation as a hilarious comedian, quite funny and likely irreverent to some degree, what exactly he’ll be joking about during the show is not yet known.

So, to find out, you’ll just have to tune in and see what he has to say when it’s released on the 30th! Hopefully it lives up to his reputation and lets him reach beyond the grave to make people laugh one last time.
