Why’s the left panicking so badly about Elon’s purchase of Twitter? Though he might not be woke, he’s certainly not a conservative and has pledged to make Twitter a neutral town square that allows for the free sharing of ideas.
Surely a digital town square is nothing to freak out about, particularly if you believe in free speech or don’t think your ideas are so weak that they need censorship to be kept alive when they’re criticized.
But, of course, neither of those things are true for the left, which has jumped all-in on censorship and knows that its woke ideas wouldn’t survive a free marketplace of ideas.
Rather, it needs hidden managers to work algorithms behind the curtain to enforce the narrative and ensure that wokeness survives criticism from the right. Such was what Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said in a recent speech.
He began by pledging to fight what he sees as a ministry of truth in America, saying:
“You cannot have a Ministry of Truth in this country. We’re not going to let Biden get away with this one. We will be fighting back.”
Then, continuing, he said “They want to stifle dissent,” explaining then why they are so upset about the Twitter purchase, saying “And you also see it with Elon musk purchasing Twitter, you know, they wanted to use Twitter as a way to enforce the narrative.”
DeSantis then blasted the pro-Fauci censorship, something he said shouldn’t be happening in a free society. In his words:
“When you do things like talk about things that conflict with what people like Fauci say or whatever… they will silence [and censor you].”
In his view, that’s not something that should be happening in a nation like America, a supposedly free society:
“That is something for a free society to not be able to speak out on these major platforms where so much speech goes on, you know, that’s a huge, huge problem.”
Fortunately, however, “Musk saw that and must saw people being censored“, and decided to do something about it, DeSantis explained, saying:
“He saw websites like the Babylon Bee being locked out because they had the temerity to do satire about some of the transgender ideology. What he’s doing, I don’t think the board wanted to accept the offer, but they had to because financially it makes sense.”
DeSantis then turned his guns back toward the left and reminded everyone of his vowed to fight, saying:
“We let it be known in Florida, since our state pension fund has shares of Twitter, that we would absolutely hold the board of directors accountable if they breached their fiduciary duty, they’ve got to do what’s right in the interest of the shareholders.”
He then highlighted the importance of a free and open online square, saying:
“This is going to be potentially an engine where the American people can speak the truth and fight back.”
