At a time when the left is absolutely losing it over Alito’s purported Dobbs draft, pastor and evangelist Franklin Graham, son of the renowned Billy Graham, sent out a message of hope and thanksgiving, one that gets to the root of the Christian view of the abortion problem while also being full of grace and love rather than hate and vitriol.
Writing in a Facebook post on the subject in which he also shared the Politico article that leaked Alito’s opinion, Graham said:
Praise God! The Supreme Court has voted to overturn Roe v. Wade according to Politico, which received a supposedly leaked copy of the opinion draft. I don’t know if this report is true, but if it is, it’s an answer to many years of prayers.
This is far from the first time that Franklin Graham has taken to social media to speak out about abortion, which he sees as a great evil.
Back in 2015, for example, Graham posted a strongly-worded opinion on the subject, also on Facebook, calling it a sin and saying:
Abortion is a sin and is clearly murder in God’s eyes. The people who perform it have no conscience, so I’m not at all surprised that they would be selling organs, tissue, and body parts from babies. Planned Parenthood should be put out of business—they’ve done enough damage. Sin has an enormous price. Our nation will one day have to answer to God for the millions of innocent lives taken by abortion, and that applies to every politician who voted for and defended abortion. Thankfully though, no sin is too great for God’s forgiveness—even murder.
Watch the shocking video in this Washington Post report where precious lives are reduced to the value of their dismembered parts and discussed over lunch.
So, his significant post was much tamer and more merciful, probably out of a sense that restraint can play better at a time of victory, particularly when the other side is utterly melting down over its massive defeat.
If real, the Alito opinion would indeed be a major victory for Christians, as in it Alito launched an unflinching attack on abortion, specifically the cover for abortion given by Roe and Casey. For example, at one point he wrote:
“We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled.
The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision…”
Then, in another part, Alito added that:
“Roe was egregiously wrong form the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepend division. It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”
So, if later published in more or less the same form as this draft, the Dobbs opinion would likely remove abortion from the list of fundamental rights and return the issue to the states, where Christians could rally and take major action to keep the evil that is abortion out of their communities. At that point, God and Trump’s Christian SCOTUS picks will have given the opportunity and the burden to take advantage of it will be on the faithful.
