Governor Abbott of Texas isn’t at all happy that he was misled by the police following the Uvalde shooting, as their depiction of what happened led him to give a statement cheering their response, a statement that made him look bad as more details of the story emerged.
His comment about how he was furious with the police for lying to him came when he appeared for a press conference and said:
“I was misled. I am livid about what happened. I was on this very stage 2 days ago and I was telling the public information that had been told to me in a room just a few yards where we’re located right now. I wrote down hand notes in detail about what everyone in that room told me and substantial order about what happened…as everybody has learned, the information I was given turned out in part to be inaccurate. I was absolutely livid about that.”
And he has good reason to be. During that first press conference, which occurred on May 25th, Abbott said:
“All Texans have been shaken to their core in the wake of the horrific tragedy that occurred yesterday in the close-knit community of Uvalde. We must come together in support of the families of the innocent victims, the law enforcement officers who heroically responded, and the entire Uvalde community, which will be impacted by this senseless act of violence for generations to come.
“As the investigation by state and local authorities continues, it is our duty as elected officials to evaluate all possible means of making our schools safer to prevent future tragedies and ensure communities across the state—whether they are underserved populations within large cities or rural areas of the state—have the mental health resources needed. The State of Texas continues working to better protect and serve all Texans, young and old.”
He also said “It could have been worse. The reason it was not worse is because law enforcement officials did what they do.”
While the officers who actually tried to neutralize the suspect should be supported and cheered, many did not act heroically, and Abbott’s original statement, apparently based on false information, didn’t reflect that fact.
In fact, it appears to have been as bad as it was only because of the cowardice of the responding officers.
Continuing in the second, May 27th press conference, Governor Abbott vowed that the FBI and Texas Rangers will get to the “bottom of every fact with absolute certainty” and then added that “My expectation is that as we speak and in every minute going forward, law enforcement is going to earn the trust of the public by doing exactly what they’re supposed to do from this point on.”
What remains to be seen is how much this incident damages the right’s support of law enforcement. Though the left has adopted an anti-cop stance, the right largely hasn’t, though that could change given the FBI’s perfidy and the cowardice of the response of the police in Uvalde.
