Former President Trump erupted on Truth Social, his social media app, after Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake had a contentious back and forth with Fox News Channel personality Brett Baier about drag queens and what she and others contend was massive voter fraud in 2020.
For reference, during the interview Baier quoted from the Washington Post to press Lake, a very pro-Trump Republican, saying:
“As a candidate, you come under scrutiny. The Washington Post has a story today that says Arizona GOP candidate who criticized drag queens was once a fan according to a drag queen.
“This is the quote, ‘Arizona GOP gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake who has attacked drag queens as dangerous to children attended the shows of drag queen Richard Stephens for 20 years and once hired him to perform at her home,’ Do you care to address that?”
Lake immediately fired back and called the article “defamatory,” saying:
“I do care. I actually do care to address that and I’m really shocked. I’m actually appalled that Fox News would take a defamatory story like that and we are pursuing legal action against this drag queen, I’m appalled that you would bring that up when you have not talked about our stolen election.”
The two then went back and forth about the story, with Baier wanting to stick with it and Lake evidently not wanting to discuss the matter, eventually saying:
“I’m happy to address it. I’m happy to address it. But I’m really disappointed in Fox. I thought you were a little better than CNN.
“This is a person who I covered for decades, for decades, 20 years. And he has never been in my home. He says he has been in my home for a drag show? That’s ludicrous. He has never been in my home. He has lied.
“We tried serve him defamation papers. Is he so shady we can’t track him down because is he not even welcome at the places he worked.”
The two then went back to arguing over Fox’s coverage of the election, 2000 Mules, and the drag queen story, with Lake eventually claiming that the entire story was made up and describing it again as “defamatory.”
Following the interview, Trump fired off a statement on Truth Social in which he described the interview as “very unfair”, though he avoided the drag queen allegations and focused mainly on the 2020 election and recent Dinesh D’Souza documentary about it, saying:
Arizona Gubernatorial Candidate Kari Lake was absolutely fantastic in her interview with a very unfair Bret Baier on Fox News. She absolutely destroyed him on the subject of the 2020 Presidential Election Fraud and “Irregularities.” It is a MUST WATCH, she will never be invited back, and he wanted to get off that subject as quickly as possible – had no answers. Kari is the kind of tough minded and smart person our Country needs if we are ever going to be great again!
