Give the left an inch and it will complain that you didn’t hand over the inch in an anti-racist manner while accosting you for daring to not immediately hand over an entire mile. Such is what Cory “Spartacus” Booker showed in a recent interview about Juneteenth in which he complained that people aren’t celebrating the newly adopted federal “Juneteenth” holiday in what he views as the appropriate manner.
Speaking on that when he appeared on Stephen Colbert’s show, Spartacus attacked the commercialization of the holiday, saying:
“I think the materialism, commercialism, those streams in our society often detract from the nobility and principles and ideals, but also for us confronting the fullness of our history.
“I’ve gotten frustrated on Martin Luther King Day; we’ve created a sanctification of Martin Luther King, when he was unpopular when he died. He pushed this country to expand its moralization.
“The idea this holiday is descending into consumerism, we can’t let that happen. Companies will want to pad their bottom lines, but we have a responsibility to not cheapen the holiday. Most importantly to be and live the lives we’re celebrating.”
Apparently the commercialization of Christmas, Easter, and July Fourth isn’t all that important, as Cory “Spartacus” Booker hasn’t made an issue out of companies hawking their goods on those days.
But “Juneteenth”, which only became a holiday in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the resulting “anti-racist” riots that torched many an American city street, that random and brand new holiday must be preserved in its most perfect form by Cory Booker and the other guardians of anti-racism, apparently.
Cory Booker was one of the senators behind the introduction of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, working with then-Senator Kamala Harris and two others to do so, with the group releasing a statement about it at the time, June of 2020.
Booker, speaking on what he saw as the importance of the Juneteenth, was quoted in the statement as saying:
“The celebration of Juneteenth is about far more than remembering the day in 1865 when, more than two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved Texans were finally freed from the bondage of slavery.
“Juneteenth is about reclaiming our history, rejoicing in the progress we’ve made, and recommitting to the work yet undone.
“Our nation still has a long way to go to reckon with and overcome the dark legacy of slavery and the violence and injustice that has persisted after its end. Making Juneteenth a federal holiday represents a step forward in the journey of healing America is still taking.”
In other words, it’s still not good enough, as nothing ever is with such people, but he and his cronies were willing to take it and use it to push a new, “anti-racist” holiday on the American people. Wonderful.
Harris, for her part, commented on the bill at the time too, saying:
“On Juneteenth, we remember the millions who suffered, died, and survived the crushing reality of slavery in America, and recommit ourselves to continuing in the fight for equal justice for all. Without question, it should be recognized with the respect of a federal holiday.”
