The NRA thought that Congressman Chris Jacobs, a Republican from New York, would be on the side of firearm rights. And so it backed him, endorsing him as a Congressman that would defend gun rights by giving him an 83% rating in 2020.
At the time, he made it sound like he would defend gun rights, saying:
“I have always stood with law-abiding gun owners. I promise to uphold this commitment to protecting our rights, and Western New York gun owners can rest assured they have an ally and a fighter for them in Congress with me.”
He won the race and entered the legislature. Now that he’s there, he’s turning on the hand that fed him and has sided against gun owners and against the NRA by proclaiming that, were an assault weapons ban to be put forward, he would vote for it, with his opinion on matters supposedly changed by the recent mass shootings.
News on that comes from Buffalo News, which reported that he said:
“I hope I’ve been compassionate when I read and heard about previous incidents like this that have happened over the years, but I guess there’s just something markedly different when it happens in your city, to people you know. This has been a profoundly impactful event for me.”
Continuing, he took the time to emphasize his “family man” credentials, saying:
“Being a father and having young children and visualizing what those parents are going through and, I guess, being able to feel it more personally certainly has had an impact as well.”
It was then that he started getting to his main point, which is that he’s up for banning so-called “assault rifles” now. Speaking on that, the RINO rep said:
“If an assault weapons ban bill came to the floor that would ban something like an AR-15, I would vote for it. So I want to be clear: I would vote for it.”
But that’s not all! Nope, Jacobs, not content with turning on the NRA and his voters by calling for an assault weapons ban, also called for an age limit to be put in place for such weapons and on restrictions on things like magazine size, saying:
“Individuals cannot buy beer, they cannot get cigarettes until 21. I think it’s perfectly reasonable that the age limit at least for these highly lethal, high- capacity semiautomatic weapons should be 21.”
“I think it’s reasonable to say: does a civilian need more than a 10 round magazine in their in their guns? And I think that that’s the type of thing where you really need a national policy because otherwise, you know, (higher-capacity) magazines are going to be floating around from state to state.”
Oh, and he wants to stop civilians from buying body armor.
As a reminder to Congressman Jacobs and gun-grabbers like him, the 2nd Amendment explicitly states “shall not be infringed,” not “shall not be infringed unless you’re really sad or scared because a bad person did something evil.” The language is clear for a reason: the right to keep and bear arms is meant to not be infringed, regardless of the circumstances.
