According to a shocking report in the Epoch Time, a Jan. 6 prisoner, Chris Worrell, who was released by a federal judge after being denied cancer treatment for eight months while in prison is now “in dire straights,” at least according to his girlfriend.
Worrell was arrested in March over his involvement in the January 6th Capitol riot, and has been “charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds, engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct in a restricted building, and violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds“, according to the Epoch Times.
Other than a tip given the police, however, there is no evidence of Worrell’s entering the Capitol. He has denied doing so, with the statement of facts providing that:
WORRELL was extremely agitated and upset that the FBI was at his house. He eventually admitted that he was at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, but denied entering the U.S. Capitol building, and specifically denied any other wrongdoing or criminal conduct on his part. He also became agitated when asked about the Proud Boys. WORRELL stated that “the Proud Boys were not a racist white supremacist group like the media tries to portray.”
Despite that denial and no evidence other than a tip and a photo of him spraying pepper gel while outside the Capitol, Worrell was locked up and not allowed to receive treatment for his cancer. The Epoch Times, reporting on that horrifying ordeal, notes that:
Worrell has a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, and had been managing the illness since he was diagnosed in 2007. He remained at stage one of the illness for several years.
But Priller said that when Worrell was being held in Charlotte County, he didn’t have access to his medications during that time.
“They wouldn’t allow the doctor to bring them in,” Priller asserted. “They said I should go get them, but you can’t do that. You can’t bring medicines into a prison. They won’t let you do that. So our doctor wrote a prescription and sent it to them and they didn’t process it. It took almost the whole three weeks. At that point he was transferred to Oklahoma by Con-Air, I guess, where he stayed for another couple of days, still with no meds.”
Not only that, but, according to the same report, the prison personnel then incorrectly transcribed or fabricated notes about his care, leading to his meeting doctors but not actually receiving treatment.
That culminated in Worrell filing multiple complaints about his treatment, which led the prison to toss him in an even deeper hole:
“They told him if he keeps putting in grievances they were going to put him in the hole,” Priller said. “and they did. They kept him there for 16 days.”
Sickening. They locked a man up, tossed him in a prison cell, and refused to get him proper treatment for his cancer, then, when he complained about the horrid conditions of his imprisonment, tossed him in an even deeper and darker hole.
Fortunately, however, Mr. Worrell was released from the dark hole on orders of a judge who was not impressed with the level of care he had so far received, with the Epoch Times quoting his lawyer on that point and saying:
“Of course, from a legal perspective,” Stavrou told The Epoch Times in an exclusive interview, “the government and the courts were extremely reluctant to grant any of those conditions and I think that’s pretty evident by the fact you can see the number of individuals who are still incarcerated in various jails across the country waiting to be sent to the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Virginia or the Washington D.C. jail. Mr. Worrell, of course, received what could be argued as horrendous medical care while at the jail, and there were numerous attempts to thwart that medical care or to thwart the physicians of Mr. Worrell in regards to what treatment was needed.”
[…]“Of course, there was no follow-up care for several months. And at the end of the day, the judge was not overly impressed with the overall care that Mr. Worrell was not receiving and then started to force the issue, which culminated with Chris receiving conditions of release.”
Unfortunately, however, while he was released and thus is now able to access better medical care, it might be too late.
His girlfriend, speaking on the topic of his health and how it deteriorated due to the lack of treatment during his confinement, said:
“Chris just finished five rounds of chemotherapy and has a follow-up appointment in July for further diagnostic tests. His medical condition has deteriorated dramatically. His teeth, his skin, so many issues that could have been prevented. Chris is in dire straights.”
