Who’s the funniest politically correct comedian? Oh, that’s right; there isn’t one. Political correctness and comedy mix like water and oil, the two are diametrically opposed.
Unfortunately, too many comedians are unwilling to accept that. Though Joe Rogan, Bill Maher, Bill Burr, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and Ricky Gervais have pushed back to some extent, though far too many of their fellow comedians have sat silently as the woke mob attacks comedians for being non-PC.
Well now another hilarious actor has stepped up to the plate to combat cancel culture and the woke mob: Rowan Atkinson, the actor of “Mr. Bean” fame, just thrashed cancel culture in an interview for the Irish Times, saying:
“It does seem to me that the job of comedy is to offend, or have the potential to offend, and it cannot be drained of that potential. Every joke has a victim. That’s the definition of a joke. Someone or something or an idea is made to look ridiculous.”
Indeed. But the wokies just can’t grasp that, unless of course the joke is one that targets white, Christian men, who are always fair game.
The interviewer then asked Atkinson if comedians need to avoid “punching down”, another phrase the leftists use to attack those that make funny jokes, claiming that comedians shouldn’t make fun of those less prominent than they are for…some reason or another.
Atkinson, however, wasn’t willing to start bending the knee on that issue either. Instead, he said:
“I think you’ve got to be very, very careful about saying what you’re allowed to make jokes about. You’ve always got to kick up? Really?
“What if there’s someone extremely smug, arrogant, aggressive, self-satisfied, who happens to be below in society? They’re not all in houses of parliament or in monarchies.
“There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.”
This isn’t the first time that Rowan Atkinson has pushed back against the cancel culture mob that is dominating the West and making comedy the opposite of good and funny.
As Deadline reported in January of 2021, he did so then too, attacking the cancel culture mob as a mob of angry medieval peasants looking for something to burn, saying:
“The problem we have online is that an algorithm decides what we want to see, which ends up creating a simplistic, binary view of society. It becomes a case of either you’re with us or against us. And if you’re against us, you deserve to be ‘cancelled.’
“It’s important that we’re exposed to a wide spectrum of opinion, but what we have now is the digital equivalent of the medieval mob roaming the streets looking for someone to burn. So it is scary for anyone who’s a victim of that mob, and it fills me with fear about the future.”
Good for Mr. Bean! Perhaps he can again journey to California and teach us a few things, albeit more eloquently than in the Mr. Bean films.
