Though former President Donald Trump is still the likely 2024 presidential pick for the GOP, as his recent victory in TPUSA poll showed (Trump won by a whopping 60 points, wiping the floor with all of his competitors), Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is still keeping himself as a contender, particularly if Trump doesn’t run, by wading into issues of national importance rather than sticking purely to the sphere of Florida.
Such is what he did during a recent speech of his at Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida.
During that speech, DeSantis didn’t only highlight his own record and mention what he has done that has allowed Florida to thrive as other states have buckled under the weight of their own Covid policies, though he did that.
Rather, he also tore into President Joe Biden, using Biden’s recent Covid diagnosis as an opportunity to blast the American “Resident in Chief” whose policies have proven so bad for America. In his words:
“I must say he did test positive for COVID. And I want to, on the behalf of the state of Florida, wish President Biden a speedy recovery from COVID. And I also want to wish the United States of America a speedy recovery from Joe Biden.”
Commenting on how deleterious Brandon’s policies have been and highlighting particular areas of concern, DeSantis then said:
“He came in and cranked the printing presses, kneecapped American energy, and he also opened our southern border.
“And what we’ve seen in the last year and a half is the largest illegal migration into this country in the history of the United States of America. We have record human trafficking, we have record sex trafficking, and we have record drug trafficking.”
Moving on to a different issue of national importance, DeSantis also slammed the wokeness that has infected the US military, saying “They’re more apt to be talking about pronouns than they are about winning wars.”
But it wasn’t just national issues that DeSantis touched on. He also brought up his own record and what he’s done for Florida, saying: “We make sure in Florida, we do not use our tax dollars to teach our kids to hate this country or to hate each other on the basis of race.”
Even with such a record and in making all the right points, DeSantis likely won’t be the GOP nominee for 2024 unless Trump changes course dramatically and decides not to run. In such a case, DeSantis, currently the runner-up in most polls, would almost certainly fill Trump’s shoes and be the MAGA nominee for 2024.
Still, it’s good to see a MAGA politician like DeSantis doing so well at pushing his own state back toward sanity and in keeping the pressure up on Biden.
Trump is great, but he needs someone to follow in his footsteps, in 2028 if not 2024. DeSantis, in attacking Biden and highlighting his excellent record, is making it obvious he wants to be that guy.
