There are certain things that one shouldn’t do if under investigation for shooting two people on a movie set, one of them fatally, even if accidentally.
Joking about the shooting is an obvious one, as is trying to make light of it or ignoring it; rather, making amends seems more appropriate, fitting, and likely to lead to a good judicial outcome.
Similarly, making threats on social media or otherwise acting like the sort of person who would shoot someone in a non-self-defense situation seems to be a similarly bad idea.
But that’s exactly what Alec Baldwin did when fighting with someone on Twitter.
The fight started when Baldwin, posting about the Hutchinson testimony before the January 6th Committee, testimony that has supposedly been disputed by the top Secret Service agent involved, said “Trump tried to choke a Secret Service agent. I mean…what more do you need?”
Commenting on that post in a way obviously intended to press Baldwin’s buttons and expose just who was attacking Trump based on unverified testimony, one Twitter commenter said “Better than shooting you cinematographer.”
Well, Baldwin’s buttons were pressed and he went ballistic, making a not so thinly veiled threat directed towards the commenter in a now-deleted tweet, saying:
“When I am eventually not charged with any crime, I’ll come find you so you can apologize. I’ll find you Mike.”
The guy involved posted a picture of the back and forth to prove it happened and stop Baldwin from covering it up by deleting his tweets, saying:

The same guy, Mike Williams, also responded defiantly to Baldwin’s now-deleted threat, saying “This is the best day ever. Come and get me. I’m waiting Alex.”
Baldwin, speaking about the shooting to the police, tried to pass the buck and hint that he thought foul play could have been involved, saying:
“It reappeared. It materialized out of nowhere on top of a table in the truck, and she told me unequivocally that that box was the box the long colts were taken from to put into the gun. They went back to the box and there were multiple live rounds in the box. The point is, I have always maintained that this is an accident of negligence. But every time I hear a little piece like this, it sounds like there’s a chance – I’m sure it’s slim – I’m not looking for conspiracy that someone tampered with this.”
As with making threats on Twitter, presenting an accidental shooting as a conspiracy to police probably isn’t the best response.
Nor is this the first time that Baldwin has made statements he shouldn’t have. Back in 2020 he fantasized about then-President Trump’s murder, saying:
“Who arrests Trump if he refuses to concede? Who drags him out? Pepper spray? Cuffs? A knee on his neck, cutting off his oxygen? Does he wheeze ‘I can’t breathe.’ Just whale away on him like a piñata? Rodney King style? The thug who has destroyed the country. What does he deserve?”
