Former President Donald Trump tore into the New York Times in a recent “Save America” Statement, echoing his many past comments about the paper and its far-left outlook in an epic statement in which he ripped it to sheds, saying:
The failing New York Times is down 40% year-to-date because they are Fake News. Their reporters are dishonest, and their front page has become a work of total fiction, not news. They hate our Country, and they hate reporting the truth, which is why America is not respected and our Nation has never been weaker. Instead, they obsess over January 6, just like they did over Impeachment Hoax #1, Impeachment Hoax #2, the Mueller Witch Hunt, and Russia, Russia, Russia. The New York Times will continue to decline because people no longer believe their reporting is even close to being true. Fake polls, phony stories, and made up quotes—they are a disgrace to journalism and have set it back many many years. THE NEW YORK TIMES IS TRULY THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE!
He also ripped into the leftist paper on Truth Social, saying:
Wow! The Failing New York Times is really failing now: Down more than 40%, and heading lower. FAKE NEWS!
The speculative reason for the former president’s attack on the New York Times, other than that he just dislikes the leftist “journalists” running it and wanted to mock it even more than he already has, is that it recently ran a poll claiming that he has lost half the GOP vote.
In it, the author, Micahel Bender, says “Far from consolidating his support, the former president appears weakened in his party, especially with younger and college-educated Republicans. Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida is the most popular alternative.”
The article goes on to attack Trump for the usual things, namely focusing on relitigating 2020 rather than moving on and for the January 6th mess.
However, while Trump might be sitting at “only” 50 percent support right now, which Bender makes sound like a major problem, he still holds his grip on about half that party.
That’s far, far more than any of his competitors, even Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is unlikely to run in a primary if Trump runs so as to avoid a fight between the two of them, meaning that the MAGA movement holds a large chunk of the party and, even if some would prefer DeSantis, they’re likely to go with Trump rather than some Mike Pence type.
Additionally, the demographics cited as being anti-Trump generally in the GOP are the college-educated and youth. As reported on YahooNews:
The most striking of demographics that oppose a Trump reelection effort are those under 35 years old, 64% of which said they would object to Trump heading the 2024 ticket and instead said they would vote for somebody else in the Republican primary.
Even more concerning for Trump is primary voters who are college-educated, with 65% of those polled saying they would vote against Trump if he ran against other Republican nominees.
Those demographics are not traditionally pro-conservative, much less pro-Trump, so it makes sense that college-educated, somewhat liberal “Republicans” are anti-Trump; all their friends are, so even if they’re somewhat more conservative they’re unlikely to admit liking a firebrand like Trump.
Real America, on the other hand, is still firmly aligned behind Trump, whatever the NYT says about elites and youths disliking him.
