Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently appeared on CNBC’s “Power Lunch” to discuss inflation and ended up giving a bizarre statement on the matter, one that somehow managed to be both worrying in terms of what information he provided and sound shockingly insouciant, with Buttigieg noting what’s going on but saying next to nothing about the plans to combat it, if there even are any.
In his words:
“we’re also, of course, seeing these very, very challenging pressures on prices, whether we’re talking about energy, whether we’re talking about goods, whether we’re talking about shipping. And it’s that interaction of those two things, high demand, which is great news, but really a challenge for the supply side to keep up with that that’s put us in an economic situation that continues to be really tough to manage.
“The president has made clear his top economic priority is keeping prices under control and fighting inflation. We’re using all of the tools available to us to do that, but if you just consider the magnitude of the shock that the pandemic created, we’re going to continue seeing those shock waves reverberate through our economy, I think, for quite some time.”
So it’s Biden’s “top economic priority”, but no real information on what he’s doing to bring down the inflation rate or fight the root causes of the current inflation problem were provided by Mayor Pete…either he’s as much an incompetent ignoramus as Kamala, which is possible, or Team Biden is bemoaning inflation but doing little of note to actually fight it, which is also possible.
Either way, his “we’re doing everything we can to fight it but won’t give you any details about what concrete steps we’re taking” answer was less than inspiring and indeed quite worrying.
Unfortunately, the rest of Team Biden isn’t doing much better at explaining how the problem is being handled. Biden himself, for example, continues to blame the “Putin price hike” for the inflation problem, saying things like:
“Look, folks, today I’d like to speak about my top economic priority: fighting inflation. I understand Americans are anxious, and they’re anxious with good reason. I was raised in a household when the price of gasoline rose precipitously, it was the discussion at the table. It made a difference when food prices went up.
“But we’ve never seen anything like Putin’s tax on both food and gas.“
Similarly, he said:
But make no mistake about it: I understand inflation is a real challenge to American families.
Today’s inflation report confirmed what Americans already know: Putin’s price hike is hitting America hard.
Gas prices at the pump. Energy and food prices account for half of the monthly price increases since May.
In other words, “it’s all Putin’s fault, so we can only make vague statements about ‘fighting inflation’ while hoping things work themselves out”. Not exactly confidence-inspiring statements from Team Biden, whether coming from Brandon himself or Mayor Pete.
