Remember when it was all the rage for leftist content creators to announce that they would be leaving Spotify and pulling their content, normally music, from it unless the streaming platform kicked the immensely popular Joe Rogan off of it?
Well, the folk rock band Crosby, Stills & Nash just learned the hard way that demanding cancelation by making yourself irrelevant and harder to listen to isn’t a brilliant business decision, as they left Spotify just five months ago and are already crawling back to Spotify, humiliated and defeated while Rogan is still going strong.
Billboard, reporting on that, noted:
Crosby, Stills & Nash music can now be streamed on Spotify once again, five months after David Crosby, Graham Nash and Stephen Stills requested their labels remove their recordings in support of Neil Young‘s decision to leave the streaming service.
The band, back during the February dispute between Neil Young and Spotify, said:
“We support Neil and we agree with him that there is dangerous disinformation being aired on Spotify’s Joe Rogan podcast. While we always value alternate points of view, knowingly spreading disinformation during this global pandemic has deadly consequences. Until real action is taken to show that a concern for humanity must be balanced with commerce, we don’t want our music — or the music we made together — to be on the same platform.”
That followed individual band members speaking out against Rogan and Spotify. Nash, for example, said:
“There is a difference between being open to varying viewpoints on a matter and knowingly spreading false information which some 270 medical professionals have derided not only false but dangerous. Likewise there is a difference between misinformation, in which one is unaware that what is being said is false, versus disinformation which is knowingly false and intended to mislead and sway public opinion. In this case, in a way that could cost people their lives.
“It should also be acknowledged that many younger musicians, and many musicians of all ages, rely on platforms like this to gain exposure to a wider audience and share their music with the world.
“Not everyone is able to take steps like this which is all the more reason that platforms like Spotify must be more responsible and accountable for the content they are obligated to moderate for the good of the public at large.”
Why the public should listen to what members of a folk rock band think about Covid-19 and misinformation policies was not said, though evidently the band members thought their audience would pressure Spotify regarding Rogan, or that their leaving would matter and change Spotify’s mind.
It didn’t, and now Nash and his fellow band members are back on Spotify, which has continued to host Rogan’s podcast despite the hatred directed its way for doing so by the likes of Nash and Neil Young. So add some more victory tally to the free speech column, as cancel culture was stared down and defeated in yet another minor culture war skirmish.
