The Brittney Griner saga continues, now with the Russians taking the step of dragging her into court for a trial, with the US moaning that it will be a sham trial (never mind what’s going on here with the January 6th Committee and its kangaroo court nature) as the Russians prepare to deal with the woman who smuggled cannabis-derived oil for a vape device into the Russian Federation.
Ignoring the fact that Griner, if the allegations about what she did are true, and they seem to be, and what is going on in the US with issues from the trial of Derek Chauvin to the attempted persecution of Kyle Rittenhouse, the January 6th nonsense to the multiple, absurd impeachments of Trump, Americans are freaking out about the Russians dragging the America-hating athlete into court and belittling the justice of the Russian court system.
Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, for example, attacked the Russian court system before it even began, saying:
“Brittney Griner has been wrongfully detained for four months, and Russia is now engaging in theater by subjecting her to a sham trial in an effort to create a false pretense that she is anything other than a political prisoner.”
Similarly, Griner’s lawyer recently attacked the Russian system and described her as a “political pawn” rather than a “locked-up drug smuggler”, saying:
Today’s hearing was administrative in nature and not on the merits. That said, the fact remains that the U.S. Government has determined that Brittney Griner is wrongfully detained and being used as a political pawn. [1/2]
The negotiation for her immediate release regardless of the legal proceedings should remain a top priority and we expect @POTUS and @VP to do everything in their power, right now, to get a deal done to bring her home. [2/2]
Secretary of State Blinken has also attacked Russia for its detaining Griner, ridiculously describing her arrest and being locked up as “illegal”, saying:
“As a general proposition, Jake. I have got no higher priority than making sure that Americans who are being illegally detained in one way or another around the world come home. And that includes Paul Whelan. That includes Brittney Griner. That includes people in a number of other countries.”
Unsaid was how locking someone up for “drug smuggling” is illegal. Rather, it looks like the left is just mad that a) the Russians take the war on drugs more seriously than we do and b) that they have the courage and temperament necessary to ignore the “equity” and “restorative justice” shills and instead equally enforce the law, including against a black woman.
Also unsaid was why the US should exert itself for a woman who took pains to protest it and its anthem during the 2020 WNBA season when patriotic Americans need help and our already tense relationship with Russia hardly needs another problem to deal with, much less a problem stemming from our being angry at their locking up a drug dealer for possessing a product that is still illegal in America.
