Fox News host Sean Hannity broke with Trump (though perhaps unintentionally, as he didn’t mention the former president during his broadcast) during last night’s broadcast of his show, supporting the Speaker of the House’s Taiwan visit and attacking the Biden Administration for trying to dissuade her from going on it.
Speaking on that point, Hannity claimed that she “had to visit” after it was hinted that she might go and the Red Chinese reacted so strongly against the idea, saying:
“She had to visit. It would’ve projected nothing but pure weakness otherwise. America cannot ever be bullied by the CCP or anybody. It was only last week that the President of China humiliated Joe Biden and they were bragging about it, lecturing Biden, threatening Biden.”
That’s probably true: once the idea was announced and China went berserk, Pelosi couldn’t avoid the trip without looking weak.
In any case, Hannity continued, describing what Biden should be doing to combat China and blasting him and his administration as weak for so often being soft on China:
“Joe should’ve pressed President Xi on the origins of Covid, China’s unfair trade practices, certainly intellectual property theft, their oppression against the minority Uighurs and the Chinese fighter jets flying in Taiwan’s airspace every other day, along with talk of reunification which is a takeover of Taiwan or as Xi likes to claim — anyway, again, ask yourself why is Biden and the White House not standing by Pelosi, why are they buckling under the pressure to China? Why are there reports Biden didn’t want Pelosi to go?
“You know, how weak can our president be? Even the far-left media mob is now slamming the Speaker, they are joining with Biden, they want Biden to continue to be weak. You’ve got Thomas Friedman, idiot that he is at ‘The New York Times,’ writing a piece entitled ‘Why Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan is utterly reckless.’ One former Obama NSC advisor saying Pelosi’s visit was not in America’s best interest. Why not?”
Hannity’s comments on the matter are a break from what Trump and Tucker Carlson have said on the matter. Trump, in a post on TruthSocial, for example, said:
Why is Nancy Pelosi getting involved with China and Taiwan other than to make trouble and more money, possibly involving insider trading and information, for her cheatin’ husband? Everything she touches turns to Chaos, Disruption, and “Crap” (her second big Congress “flop” happening now!), and the China mess is the last thing she should be involved in – She will only make it worse. Crazy Nancy just inserts herself and causes great friction and hatred. She is such a mess!!!
Similarly, Tucker Carlson blasted the move as reckless, saying:
So, on every level, meaningfully, on the policy levels that matter, Biden has been more pro-China than any president and yet he seems to want a war with China. Now, this does not make any sense at all. In fact, it only makes sense if the Biden White House is intentionally trying to weaken and destroy the United States.
Both sides have a point. Hannity is probably right that America couldn’t back down after the trip was announced and China tried to bully us into backing down, but Trump and Tucker have a point that Pelosi shouldn’t have gone and risked war at a time when our military is so weak thanks to wokeness.
Regardless, it’s interesting seeing a commentator who mainly appeals to a pro-Trump audience break so clearly with the former president.
