How will America respond if faced with a nuclear attack? For decades, the answer has been “with overwhelming force.” Whether attacked by China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, or anywhere else with nuclear weapons, the answer always used to be that we would turn whatever country tried to hit us into a glass parking lot.
Not any more, apparently, as Biden refused to say that America would hit back harder than any enemy could imagine if the Russians start dropping nuclear weapons.
That shocking non-response came when Biden was being interviewed by CBS News’ Scott Pelley, who was asking him how America would response if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to respond with the changing situation in the Ukraine by using nuclear weapons. Pelley, beginning that line of questioning, asked:
As Ukraine succeeds on the battlefield, Vladimir Putin is becoming embarrassed and pushed into a corner. And I wonder, Mr. President, what you would say to him if he is considering using chemical or tactical nuclear weapons.
Biden responded not by threatening retaliation or by saying that the US couldn’t care less what happens to some corrupt, Eastern European oligarchy, but rather just by imploring Putin to not to “change the face of war.” In his words:
Don’t! Don’t! Don’t! It would change the face of war unlike anything since World War Two.
Pelley then pressed him on what exactly the US would do were the atom bombs to start falling, asking:
And the consequences of that would be what? What would the U.S. response be?
But Biden wouldn’t answer one way or the other. Instead, he just said “it’ll be consequential,” whatever that means. In his words:
You think I would tell you if I knew exactly what it would be? Of course I’m not going to tell you. It’ll be consequential. They’ll become more of a pariah in the world than they ever have been. And depending on the extent of what they do, will determine what response will occur.
America either would respond or wouldn’t. Biden should have made our position clear, particularly on what would happen were those weapons to hit us or our allies, but he didn’t. Instead, he left it up in the air, once again leaving the door open to miscalculation and escalation.
But while Biden played coy with atomic warfare, he’s been taking quite the opposite tack in dealing with his political enemies, Trump among them. On that front, his FBI has been raiding everyone from the former president to the MyPillow CEO in what looks to many like the sort of operation one would expect from a banana republic.
Trump called out those tin-pot dictator-like tactics in a recent rally, saying:
“What they’ve done, the radical Democrats and the deep state, is a form of political repression unlike anything our nation has ever seen. It’s a disgrace. For six straight years I’ve been harassed, investigated, defamed, slandered, and persecuted like no other president, and probably like no one, in American history. Yet all I have ever wanted and all we’ve ever fought for is to simply, very simply, Make America Great Again.”
