“Lost and Confused”: Sen. Cotton SKEWERS Biden’s China Approach

Following President Joe Biden’s recent performance at the United Nations and his administration’s China policy so far, one which some on the right describe as schizophrenic because it preserves some of the tough policies of the Trump Administration while also doing bizarre things like selling oil from our Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Red China, Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas appeared on Fox News Channel and ripped into Biden for that China policy.

Speaking on that with Maria Bartiromo, Sen. Cotton said:

“I think the president’s position towards China remains lost and confused, Maria. As you said, in the ’60 Minutes’ interview last week, he yet again said that the United States would come to Taiwan’s aid militarily if the Chinese communists go for the jugular against that free island. Yet again, for the fourth time in just 13 months, anonymous White House aides rush to walk back that statement, which is the worst of both worlds.

“The president provokes the Chinese communists without deterring them,” Cotton added. “And I think that’s been consistent in his approach to China and Russia for the first two years of his administration.

“Throughout 2021, he projected weakness, which enticed Vladimir Putin to invade Ukraine. And he’s projected weakness towards China as well, making the Western Pacific much more dangerous. Now, I, for one, think he stumbled onto the right policy, for once, in saying that we would come to Taiwan’s aid. Unfortunately, he picked himself up and dusted himself off and moved right along as if it had never happened.

Biden, for his part, mainly focused on Russia and the Ukraine during his recent Ukraine speech. Speaking on that, for example, he said:

“Let us speak plainly. A permanent member of the United Nations Security Council invaded its neighbor, attempted to erase a sovereign state from the map. Russia has shamelessly violated the core tenets of the United Nations Charter — no more important than the clear prohibition against countries taking the territory of their neighbor by force.

“Ukraine has the same rights that belong to every sovereign nation. We will stand in solidarity with Ukraine. We will stand in solidarity against Russia’s aggression. Period.

Notably, Biden did not extend that pledge to Taiwan as well though its future seems darker than the Ukraine’s in that it will be ruled by a communist, authoritarian state if defeated in an invasion rather than a traditionalist, pro-Orthodox Christianity power like Vladimir Putin’s Russia. He did, however, try to strike a balance between supporting Taiwan and reaffirming his commitment to the One China policy an obvious attempt to not get the Red Chinese too mad, saying:

We seek to uphold peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits. We remain committed to our One China policy, which has helped prevent conflict for four decades. And we continue to oppose unilateral changes in the status quo by either side.
