Brendan Fraser, a famous actor in Hollywood, said his “mother didn’t raise a hypocrite,” which is why fans won’t see him at the 2023 Golden Globes, even though he was rumored to be nominated for his role in “The Whale.”
The 53-year-old actor talked about his history with the group that puts on the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. He said the group’s response to his sexual assault claims against its former president and member Philip Berk is why he won’t go, as reported by GQ magazine.
When asked if he would go if invited, Fraser said, “I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. No, I will not participate. It’s because of the history that I have with them. And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.”
Fraser told GQ in 2018 that Berk had groped and hurt him when they had lunch together in 2003. The organization’s former head said that the accusations were not true. Fraser said that the alleged attack at the time “made me retreat” and made him feel like “something had been taken away from me.”
In the new article, the actor says that after the accusations came out, he heard from college friends and people he hadn’t worked with or seen in 30 years of his career. He said that when he heard that the story was popular on Twitter, he felt like everyone had seen him “naked.”

“It’s like people know what you look like, they know your story,” the “Blast from the Past” star said, but he also said that telling his story was freeing” and like a weight was lifted in the end.
The HFPA said that they would look into his claims. After it was done, they wanted to put out a joint statement with Fraser that said, according to the actor, “Although it was concluded that Mr. Berk inappropriately touched Mr. Fraser, the evidence supports that it was intended to be taken as a joke and not as a sexual advance.”
But Berk wasn’t kicked out of the club, and Fraser said that the club’s former president told him that he wouldn’t get in trouble at all.
Fraser refused to sign the joint statement because he “knew they would kick the can down the road. I knew they would get ahead of the story. I knew that I certainly had no future with that system as it was.” The outlet said that Berk was kicked out of the group in 2021 after he shared a piece that called Black Lives Matter a “racist hate movement.”
