Kevin Johnson, Convicted of Killing Missouri Police Officer, Was Recently Put to Death by Lethal Injection

In 2005, a Missouri man killed a Kirkwood police officer out of anger. Kevin Johnson was put to death Tuesday night, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Johnson was found to have killed Kirkwood Officer William McEntee out of anger over the death of Johnson’s brother. Court papers say that Johnson said that the police were to blame for the death.

Johnson’s lawyers have appealed the death sentence to save his life. They do not dispute that he is guilty, but they say that racism played a role in the decision to seek the death penalty because Johnson is black and McEntee was white.

Johnson was 19 years old when the murder happened. His lawyers have asked the courts to step in because of his age. Since the Supreme Court banned the execution of people who were younger than 18 when they committed a crime in 2005, courts have become less likely to sentence teens to death.

Because Johnson has a history of mental illness, his lawyers have also asked the courts to stop the execution.

Khorry Ramey, Johnson’s 19-year-old daughter, failed in her attempt to see her father die in the days before he was put to death.

The federal judge who was in charge of the case said no because a law in Missouri says that no one under 21 can watch an execution.

Ramey said, “I’m heartbroken that I won’t be able to be with my dad in his last moments. My dad is the most important person in my life. He has been there for me my whole life, even though he’s been incarcerated.”

On July 5, 2005, McEntee, a husband and father of three, went with other police officers to Johnson’s house to serve an arrest warrant. Johnson was on probation because he hit his girlfriend, and the police thought he violated his probation.

When Johnson saw the police coming, he woke up his 12-year-old brother, Joseph “Bam Bam” Long, who then ran next door to their grandmother’s house. The boy was born with a problem with his heart. Once, when he was at his grandmother’s house, he fell down and started having a seizure.

Johnson said in court that McEntee stopped his mother from going to the house to help his brother, who died at a hospital shortly after.

Later that night, McEntee went back to the neighborhood because fireworks were going off. That’s when he saw Johnson for the second time that night.

McEntee was shot by Johnson, who pulled out a gun. Then Johnson went up to McEntee and shot him again, but this time the shot killed him.
