Early Tuesday morning, a catastrophic event unfolded as a section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being struck by a container ship.
Reports and footage depict the section crumbling into the Patapsco River below following the impact, with several cars plunging into the water and multiple individuals requiring rescue efforts.
Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace described the scene as an “active search and rescue,” indicating the possibility of seven or more individuals needing assistance, according to CBS News.
“This is an unthinkable tragedy,” remarked Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, expressing shock at the sight of the Key Bridge crumbling like something out of an action movie.
Petty officer Matthew West of the Coast Guard in Baltimore disclosed that the container ship, flying a Singapore flag, was en route to Sri Lanka, as reported by WTOP.

Amidst the chaos, at least two individuals were successfully rescued, noted the Associated Press. However, the situation remained dire, emphasized Baltimore Fire Department Director of Communications Kevin Cartwright, particularly due to the chilling water temperature of 47 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge, completed in March 1977, served as a vital link to alleviate congestion in the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Stretching over 1.6 miles across the Patapsco River, it stands as the furthest of the three crossings of Baltimore Harbor, according to the New York Times.
At this time, at least 20 people are reportedly missing.
