Minnesota Democratic State Senator Nicole Mitchell, 49, found herself on the wrong side of the law after allegedly embarking on a lengthy journey to burglarize a residence hundreds of miles from her district.
Reported by The New York Post, Mitchell, representing Woodbury, a suburb of the Twin Cities, was apprehended by authorities under suspicion of first-degree burglary in Detroit Lakes, a considerable 220 miles away from her constituency. The arrest was prompted by a homeowner reporting an ongoing break-in at the property, as per local media accounts.
As of Monday afternoon, Mitchell, a former TV weather reporter and Air National Guard member, remained in custody at Becker County Jail, according to online records. Sheriff Todd Glander of Becker County anticipated charges to be formally lodged against her by Tuesday, as per statements provided to the Post.
Subsequent investigations revealed that Mitchell’s late father and stepmother resided on the same street where the senator was apprehended. The criminal complaint, cited by the Minnesota Reformer, alleges that Mitchell unlawfully entered her deceased father’s home to retrieve belongings after her stepmother ceased communication with her and other family members.

While the Senate Democratic arm, holding a narrow majority, refrained from commenting on the ongoing situation pending further details, Mark Johnson, the Senate’s Republican minority leader, condemned Mitchell’s conduct, emphasizing the expectation of legislators to uphold high standards of behavior.
Elected in 2022, Mitchell is currently halfway through her four-year term. Her legislative priorities have encompassed veterans’ affairs, child protection, and environmental issues, though some of her co-sponsored bills, ironically, revolve around toughening penalties for firearm owners failing to secure their weapons and relocating prisoners to their last known addresses.
Amidst these developments, Minnesota’s political landscape showcases diverse hues. From ultra-liberal protests to mixed sentiments towards President Joe Biden, epitomized by a significant “Uncommitted” vote share in the state’s Democratic primary, Minnesota remains a dynamic political battleground.
