Despite NPR’s liberal leanings, Berliner noted a shift in the organization’s approach during the Trump administration, particularly in its coverage of Trump’s presidency.
According to Berliner, NPR actively sought to undermine Trump’s presidency, often fixating on the unsubstantiated narrative of Russian collusion. He criticized NPR’s reliance on dubious sources and narratives, including frequent collaboration with individuals like Adam Schiff, whose claims of collusion were later debunked by the Mueller report.
Berliner’s critique extended to NPR’s handling of the Hunter Biden laptop story, which the network largely ignored, citing concerns about inadvertently benefiting Trump. This decision, Berliner argued, reflected a broader pattern of bias and a shift in NPR’s workplace culture, where identity and race have taken precedence over journalistic integrity.
NPR’s decision not to extensively cover the Hunter Biden laptop story in the weeks leading up to the 2020 presidential election drew criticism, with conservatives accusing the network of protecting Joe Biden by dismissing potentially damaging information.
Despite the Mueller report’s findings of insufficient evidence to support allegations of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, NPR persisted in highlighting these claims throughout Trump’s presidency. Trump himself had been critical of NPR’s coverage, periodically suggesting cutting federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports NPR.
