Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., is contemplating a run for governor, as confirmed by Fox News. His potential candidacy adds another layer to the already crowded field in Arizona’s Republican primary. Currently, Congressman Andy Biggs and businesswoman Karrin Taylor Robson are in the race. The winner will face Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs in the general election.
Schweikert’s spokesperson, Chris Baker, stated, “Congressman Schweikert has been approached by several prominent Arizona conservatives and Republicans who want to defeat Democrat Katie Hobbs.” Concern exists among these conservatives that the current candidates lack a viable chance against Hobbs. “The Congressman agrees with that analysis and is considering a run for Governor,” Baker added, noting that a decision will come by the end of the month.
Karrin Taylor Robson, who previously pursued the Republican nomination in 2022, touts her support from more than 8,000 donors and over 100 campaign events held this summer. “She is the candidate Democrats fear most, the clear frontrunner in this race,” her campaign asserted, welcoming anyone who wants to run for the GOP nomination “for second place.” Robson’s confidence is bolstered by her endorsement from former President Donald Trump, who proclaimed, “Karrin is proud to have President Trump’s endorsement.”
Andy Biggs has also garnered Trump’s backing. After declaring his candidacy, Trump stated, “When Andy Biggs decided to run for Governor… I had a problem—two fantastic candidates.” His endorsement for both candidates underscores the competitive nature of the primary race in Arizona.
However, the landscape is complex. “If Schweikert runs, the reality is Schweikert, Andy Biggs, and Karrin Taylor Robson all share the same harmful and unpopular agenda,” stated Sam Newton, DGA Communications Director. Newton’s critique highlights the divisions and controversies surrounding the candidates, particularly regarding health care and trade policies. The Arizona GOP primary is shaping up to be a contentious battle, with the potential of creating another closely watched congressional race if Schweikert decides to enter.
With Cook Political Report ranking both the gubernatorial and congressional races as toss-ups, all eyes will be on the candidates as the primary unfolds. The stakes are high, and the competition is fierce in Arizona’s upcoming election cycle.
