University of Nebraska at Omaha basketball forward Deng Mayar tragically drowned at just 22 years old. The announcement came from the school following the incident, which took place during a swim at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah. Mayar, who had transferred from North Dakota earlier this year, was swimming with a friend when both began to struggle in the water. Reports indicate that while the friend managed to reach the shore, he returned to assist Mayar, who subsequently went under.
The Herriman Police Department received reports of the drowning around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday. A bystander made an attempt to help but also required hospitalization. Rescue crews arrived, and divers searched the area late into the night, ultimately recovering Mayar’s body around 11 p.m. The reservoir had just reopened to the public after being closed due to algae issues.
University officials expressed deep sorrow over Mayar’s passing. Chancellor Joanne Li and Athletic Director Adrian Dowell said in a joint statement, “We are devastated to learn of Deng’s passing. On behalf of our university community, our love and sincere condolences are with his family during this difficult time.” They also extended support to Mayar’s friends and teammates across various states as they cope with the news.
Men’s basketball coach Chris Crutchfield added his heartfelt words, saying, “Our entire program is devastated to learn of Deng’s passing. After competing against him for two years, we were elated to add him to our team, and he made tremendous progress this summer.” He characterized Mayar as a joy to be around, contributing positively to the team culture.
Standing at 6-foot-8, Mayar displayed significant talent during his time at North Dakota, averaging 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds last season. His last game featured a commendable performance of 12 points and seven rebounds in a victory over South Dakota. Mayar’s sudden loss leaves a void, not just at the university but also in the hearts of those who knew him.
