The Department of Homeland Security is under scrutiny this week as criticism mounts over its enforcement of immigration laws, particularly a new “mass deportation operation.” In Pennsylvania, state lawmakers, along with advocates, are pushing for legislation that prohibits law enforcement from hiding their identities. Many ICE agents wear masks, allegedly for their protection against being doxxed. AFL-CIO Philadelphia Council President Danny Bauder decried this practice, comparing it to the antics of a notorious mob informant in an Al Pacino film. “I frankly have been horrified by the conduct of these federal agents as has been reported in the media,” Bauder stated emphatically.

His fiery remarks came during a press event, where he accused ICE agents of “disappearing innocent people.” Bauder remarked, “Kidnapping and disappearing innocent people is disgusting, it’s shameful, it’s un-American.” These sentiments were echoed by state Senator Nikil Saval, who described ICE operations as overly aggressive, with “heavily-armed, masked, unidentifiable individuals roaming our public spaces.” He voiced concern that such actions violate basic rights. State Sen. Amanda Cappelletti added that ICE’s conduct undermines public trust in law enforcement.

Support for the “No Secret Police” bill is growing, backed by figures like State Rep. Rick Krajewski. He noted the proposal is strengthened by the support of former law enforcement officers, emphasizing the need for transparency. “My job will be a lot easier if we don’t have a crime wave of people pretending to be ICE,” said Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.

Meanwhile, down I-95 in Maryland, Democrats criticized ICE after finally accessing the Baltimore facility, which had previously denied them entry. Congressman Kweisi Mfume expressed disappointment over ICE’s inefficiencies, stating, “Shame on them.” He cautioned that the current situation could impact anyone, saying, “Today it’s somebody; or tomorrow, it could in fact be one of us.” Such concerns reflect a broader fear that ICE’s actions could lead to arbitrary detentions.

In Colorado, Democrats who were previously denied access to ICE facilities finally toured one and criticized what they found. They faced hurdles such as privacy releases which they felt obstructed their oversight efforts. These frustrations resonate with members like Rep. LaMonica McIver, who endured an arrest during a previous visit and remains undeterred in her fight against what she describes as a system out of control.

The heightened tensions surrounding ICE and its operations highlight a significant divide in perceptions of immigration enforcement, with state lawmakers increasingly advocating for accountability and transparency. The conversation is far from over, as more lawmakers join the call against what they see as dangerous tactics employed by federal agents.
