Less than three months after its announcement, Elon Musk’s “America Party” seems to be on hold. According to reports, Musk wants to redirect his energy toward his companies and stay clear of a new political party that might draw voters away from the GOP. The Wall Street Journal notes that Musk is also working to keep connections with Vice President JD Vance, seen as a key figure in the MAGA movement. Musk’s concern appears to center on maintaining a good relationship with Vance rather than risking it with the creation of a new party.
While the plans for the “America Party” are currently paused, sources say Musk hasn’t officially closed the door on the idea. He could revisit it as the 2026 midterms draw closer. After spending months collaborating with the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk left the Trump administration on May 30. From there, tensions quickly escalated as Musk publicly criticized Trump’s agenda. A few days after his departure, Musk took to X—his own social media platform—to condemn a Trump-backed spending bill. “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” he wrote, expressing his disdain for what he considered irresponsible spending.
Later in June, Musk began polling his followers about the need for a new political party. One day after a survey showed 80% of respondents were in favor of the idea, he announced that the “America Party” had been formed. The announcement came on July 4, a symbolic date in American history, and Musk stated that the new party would represent freedom for the people. But as support waned, Musk faced criticism from Trump, who derisively called Musk’s plans “ridiculous” and pointed out the historical challenges third parties face in the U.S.
Amidst the back-and-forth, the relationship between Musk and Trump has seen signs of cooling. The social media exchanges eventually ceased, with Trump expressing a desire to see Musk’s businesses thrive. “I want Elon, and all businesses within our country, to THRIVE,” Trump asserted. Despite their past altercations, it seems Musk and Trump are attempting to mend their fractured alliance—for now, at least.
