Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has honored the legacies of five notable Floridians posthumously by awarding them the prestigious Governor’s Medal of Freedom. This recognition includes legendary musician Jimmy Buffett, who died in 2023 at the age of 76, along with significant political figures from both Republican and Democratic backgrounds. “I’m proud to recognize the legacies of these great Floridians,” DeSantis stated. “Our state is better for their contributions, and we’re proud they called Florida home.”
The award to Buffett reflects not only his musical achievements but also his substantial influence on Florida’s culture and commerce. Known for iconic hits like “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” Buffett’s impact extended beyond music into entrepreneurship with his Margaritaville brand. His first venture, a Margaritaville store opened in Key West in 1985, laid the groundwork for a successful franchise of restaurants, resorts, and merchandise. The governor’s office remarked, “His legacy continues to influence music and culture in Florida’s coastal communities.”
Among the honored was Lincoln Diaz-Balart, a Cuban-American politician who passed away earlier this year at the age of 70. A fierce opponent of communism, Diaz-Balart’s advocacy for a free Cuba made a lasting mark during his tenure in both the Florida House and the U.S. House. He exemplified a dedication to defending freedom and liberty.
Bob Graham and Buddy MacKay, who both served as governors of Florida, were also recognized for their public service. Graham, who died at 87, left behind a reputation for his work in education, environmental conservation, and national security. MacKay, who passed at 91, was notable for his extensive service in the state legislature and later in Washington. Additionally, John Thrasher, who served as Florida State University’s president and in various legislative capacities, received the medal following his death earlier this year at 81.
Through this tribute, DeSantis brings attention to individuals who shaped Florida’s landscape across music, politics, and social advocacy. The Governor’s Medal of Freedom not only honors their achievements but also highlights the diverse contributions that define the state’s identity.
