Former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler faces jail time after a plea deal related to a DUI incident last October. A judge in Williamson County, Tennessee, accepted his guilty plea on Tuesday. As part of the agreement, Cutler will pay a $350 fine and serve four days in jail starting September 29. Additionally, he will be on unsupervised probation for one year and must attend a DUI safety class. His driver’s license in Tennessee has been revoked.
At the time of his arrest, Cutler was found to have a loaded Glock in his truck’s center console. He was charged with multiple offenses: DUI, possessing a firearm while intoxicated, and failing to exercise due care. Notably, the firearm possession charge was dismissed under the plea deal, with Cutler agreeing to forfeit the weapon.
Witnesses reported that Cutler’s truck rear-ended a GMC vehicle. The driver of the GMC stated that Cutler attempted to flee the scene and even offered him $2,000 to avoid calling the police. According to the arrest affidavit, Cutler denied hitting the other vehicle. However, police reported visible damage on the GMC but found no significant damage to Cutler’s truck, attributing this to a mounted winch at the front.
Law enforcement observed signs of intoxication when they spoke with Cutler. Officers noted a strong smell of alcohol, slurring of his words, and bloodshot eyes. When asked to perform field sobriety tests, Cutler refused and was subsequently taken to the hospital for a blood sample.
Cutler had a successful NFL career, being drafted by the Denver Broncos in 2006 and later traded to the Chicago Bears, where he became the team’s all-time passing leader. He played with the Bears until 2016, concluding his career with the Miami Dolphins in 2017. This latest incident marks a significant downturn in his post-NFL life.
