Many hard-working, blue-collar Americans over the age of 60 understand the value of assimilation and the importance of language in fostering unity and a strong national identity. When we think back on our own experiences or those of our families, we see a nation that has thrived on the courage and tenacity of immigrants willing to work hard for their place in our land.
In 1975, when Saigon fell to the grips of communism, the brave souls who sought refuge in America did not only bring their values and dreams of freedom; they also faced the monumental challenge of learning English to communicate, integrate, and succeed. In those early years, they recognized the power of mastering the language—doing so became vital to accessing opportunities and contributing to their communities. This desire to belong and thrive resonates deeply with us as patriotic citizens who have seen the fabric of our society woven with hard work and determination.
Today, however, we find ourselves in a nation where some recent immigrant groups are not prioritizing English proficiency to the same extent. A troubling 46% of illegal immigrants are reported to struggle with the language, which poses significant barriers to achieving the American Dream. This is where we can appreciate the leadership of President Trump and his administration’s Executive Order 14224, which designates English as the official language of the United States. Rather than being exclusionary, this action empowers immigrants and holds them accountable to the values we cherish—hard work, opportunity, and respect for our systems.
This initiative is not just about policy; it is about reaffirming our identity as Americans. It reinforces the idea that learning our common language is not merely an obligation but a pathway to dignity, survival, and community.
