A man is taking legal action after suffering injuries on a water slide aboard the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas. This incident unfolded on August 7 and has raised serious concerns about the safety of the ship’s attractions.
The water slide in question, named the “Frightening Bolt,” reportedly had a crack in its acrylic glass that led to the man’s injuries. As he navigated the slide, the damage cut him, and soon after, part of the glass shattered completely, creating a hole. Witness Lillian Destefano described the scene, noting, “As I understand it, it was cracked. Like the gentleman that went before him just got cut slightly, and then when the other gentleman went down, it sliced him, but he passed it, and then the glass fell and the water gushed. No one fell through, thank God.”
A video captured the chaos that ensued as water poured out from the damaged slide. Passengers were seen screaming in fear as they scrambled to understand what had just happened. Royal Caribbean confirmed that no one fell through the opening, advising that the ship’s medical team treated the injured guest and that the slide was closed for the remainder of the cruise.
The company is currently investigating the cause of the glass breakage, and there are no further details at this time. One passenger remarked, “I was on that slide 20 minutes before. It’s a little frightening. It could’ve happened to us, and I’m glad it didn’t.”
The Icon of the Seas, which can hold over 5,600 guests, embarked on its maiden voyage in early 2024, departing from PortMiami just days before the incident. Following the mishap, the ship continued to the private island of Coco Cay before returning to port on August 9. The events on that fateful day have sparked discussions regarding safety measures on cruise ships and the need for thorough inspections of recreational facilities.
