Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov recently unveiled significant advances made by Russian forces in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Under his leadership, Moscow’s military has experienced a technological leap, with increased production of artillery shells, drones, and missiles. These advancements have allowed Russian forces to ramp up their territorial gains, nearly doubling their pace in the Ukrainian theater.
During a press briefing on August 29, Belousov stated that Russian troops are now conquering between 600 and 700 square kilometers (approximately 270 square miles) each month. This marks a substantial rise from earlier in the year, when the pace of territorial gains was reported at 300 to 400 square kilometers. “This year, we have sped up our territorial advances,” he announced, underscoring the intensified military efforts.
Belousov highlighted that the Russian army has delivered considerable blows to Ukraine’s military capabilities and infrastructure. He mentioned that since the beginning of the year, Russian forces have conducted 35 major strikes on what he termed critically important targets. These attacks have significantly damaged around 62% of key enterprises within Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. “I would particularly like to highlight strikes that reduce production capacity,” he remarked, emphasizing the strategic focus of these operations.
The Defense Minister pointed out the importance of improving Russian drone capabilities. “We need to train our drone operators faster,” he argued, indicating a pressing need for adaptation as the conflict evolves. To support this aim, Belousov detailed that the Russian military has received substantial deliveries of tactical vehicles. This year, 22,725 motorcycles, quad bikes, and buggies have been supplied, with an additional 12,186 units expected by year’s end. The move aims to enhance the mobility of tactical groups in the field.
Belousov’s remarks provide a window into the ongoing operational strategies within the Russian military. He underscored the role of training and education in preparing combat personnel for modern warfare. Starting this September, three military academies are set to introduce new specialties, which will include the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and robotic systems. This initiative reflects an acknowledgment of the increasingly technological nature of contemporary combat.
Furthermore, the Russian Defense Ministry reported staggering losses on the Ukrainian side, claiming that over 340,000 Ukrainian personnel and more than 65,000 pieces of equipment have been lost since the beginning of the year. The overarching message is clear: the combat potential of the Ukrainian army has significantly dwindled.
