Scott Lo Baido, an activist, faced arrest outside an anti-Trump event held by New York City Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani on Staten Island. A video that circulated on social media captured Lo Baido berating Mamdani, declaring, “This is my f—ing island, you are not welcome here.” His aggressive behavior prompted intervention from bystanders and law enforcement.
During the event at Istanbul Bay Authentic Mediterranean Restaurant, Lo Baido protested vigorously, shouting that he despised Jews, police, and America. The police later took him into custody, where he received summonses for disorderly conduct and other charges related to his disruptive actions.
Mamdani’s event continued amid the ruckus outside, where protesters used megaphones and other noise-making devices to drown out the speakers. Mamdani maintained his composure, telling reporters that it was disheartening to hear rhetoric urging him to “go back to where I came from.” He attributed such language to the divisive nature of Trump’s politics, asserting his intent to engage with all New Yorkers regardless of their political leanings.
Despite the chaotic scene, Mamdani reaffirmed his commitment to his agenda, which includes opposition to Trump’s proposed crackdowns on illegal immigration. “I will not let it dissuade me from continuing to come to Staten Island,” he emphasized, indicating that he appreciates the differing opinions that exist within the community.
Outside the restaurant, many protesters voiced their support for Curtis Sliwa, another candidate in the mayoral race, labeling him as the only viable option to improve the city. They expressed their frustration with Mamdani by chanting that he doesn’t represent Staten Island’s values, with one protester declaring, “This is Trump country.”
The sentiments of the protesters highlighted a stark divide in the political landscape. Many believed that Mamdani’s socialist policies, such as raising corporate taxes and implementing a freeze on rent, would harm the local economy. One Staten Island resident remarked, “He wants to make everything free. He can’t afford that.”
However, there were also voices of support for Mamdani, including Shahana Masum, who defended him as a candidate aligned with her community’s values. She countered the negativity she has faced by asserting her dignity as an immigrant and firmly stated that derogatory remarks would not deter her from supporting what she believes in.
As the mayoral race heats up, the contrasting visions for New York City are becoming increasingly apparent. With strong feelings on both sides, the outcomes of the upcoming election will reflect deeply held beliefs about the future direction of the city.
