The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is making headlines by shifting its political contributions away from Democrats toward Republicans as the vital midterm elections of 2026 approach. Historically a strong ally of the Democratic Party, the union has recently shown signs of growing frustration with it, highlighted by its decision not to endorse either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential cycle.
Internal polling revealed that almost 60% of Teamsters members favored Trump over Harris, suggesting notable discontent with the Democratic leadership among the rank-and-file. Sean O’Brien, the Teamsters Union General President, has vocally criticized the Democratic Party, calling it “bought and paid for” by big tech interests. He questioned, “What have you done for us?” showcasing a sentiment of betrayal felt by many union members.
The Teamsters’ political arm, known as DRIVE PAC, is backing this shift with funding—approximately $70,000 directed toward Republican causes in 2025. This stands in stark contrast to its more than $15 million contributions to the Democratic Party over the last two and a half years. Notably, this is the second consecutive election cycle where the Teamsters have provided financial support to Republican candidates after decades of loyal Democratic backing.
Kara Deniz, a spokesperson for the Teamsters, remarked, “Our members are working people whose interests cut across party lines.” This acknowledgment of political diversity highlights the union’s attempt to better represent the voices of its members rather than adhering strictly to a historical party alignment.
O’Brien emphasized a central concern: “Where the Democrats lost … they fell in love with big money. They forgot who they’re truly representing: working people.” His comments indicate a growing alienation within the ranks of union members, pointing to a desire for practical solutions over ideological narratives. The shifting landscape reflects not only dissatisfaction with current political dynamics but also the evolving priorities of the working class.
The Teamsters’ alignment with certain Republicans signals a significant change in the labor movement’s political landscape, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the needs of working Americans over party loyalty. As O’Brien pointed out, union members prioritize financial security and job protection, which may now find a more receptive audience among Republicans than Democrats.
